Re: The unofficial OSG Fender Mustang bass thread.
For years I had a mid-2000s (I think?) Fiesta Red Mustang Bass. It was my only bass and I loved playing it so much. I could never get along with the pickups though. They weren't really designed for the rock band I was trying to play them in.
Still, this thing was literally love at first sight. I saw it in a pawn shop window, and ran inside practically drooling. I made an attempt at haggling with the shop owner, but he could clearly see that I was in love with it and would pay the asking price anyway. And he was right, I did.
As much fun as it was to play, its sound really didn't suit my band and my bandmates eventually talked me into swapping it out for something chunkier. So it sat at home for a few years, not seeing much action.
Then about two years ago, I picked up a 1971 Musicmaster Bass on eBay for a ridiculous bargain price (less than half of what I paid for the Mustang Bass!) that had clearly gone through a few rounds of mods and refins. At the time had a pickup and guard from a P-Bass copy, and a brown stain finish.
It played and sounded beautiful, but the stain and pickguard had to go. I refinished it in Daphne Blue and made a new Mustang pickguard for it. And hot damn is it a stunner now!
The Musicmaster does everything I want and I couldn't justify keeping both basses, so I sold the Mustang a little while ago. I hope its new owner is having as much fun with it as I did!

Re: The unofficial OSG Fender Mustang bass thread.
Can't believe I haven't seen this thread before.
I've owned a Jazzmaster since 1979.
My son Curtis played a Bronco. Then in 2012 we rented out our house during the London Olympics for enough to fund a vacation in Japan. We had our sights on denim for dad, and a Mustang for Jr. Did well with both.
We mastered the pronunciation of "Fender Japan Mustang bass, used" and went to perhaps 40 shops. Lots of new ones, we were looking for a used blond or competition. Ended up with a lovely blond. Not sure of the date, but this model not only has a lovely slab board but a good-looking tort scratchplate.
Pix show it dismantled, so we could get it in handluggage.... and whisk thru UK customs.
It's a great instrument, way better than the 70s originals I've played, though sooner or later a new pickup might be on the cards.

Holy cow that looks gorgeous! Love the look of a maple fretboard with a competition blue body!
How thick is the neck? The 1978 mustang bass I used to have had a neck like a telephone pole, which is why I sold it. I've always wondered if they were all like that or if mine had been improperly made at the factory.

It’s pretty big. I sold my mint ‘71 comp Orange bass for this. I much prefer the bigger, rounder neck profile.astro wrote: ↑Sat Oct 20, 2018 6:04 pmHoly cow that looks gorgeous! Love the look of a maple fretboard with a competition blue body!

Re: The unofficial OSG Fender Mustang bass thread.
My Mustang bass is still at the conceptual stage. So far I have a '77-'78 black guard, '67 pickups and wiring, a reissue control plate, and, er, a '77 Musicmaster (loaded) neck. Musicmaster bodies suitable for modding come up fairly regularly, but the biggest challenge is finding a vintage tailpiece (though I'll go modern if I have to; I'm clearly not aiming for period-correctness).
