Daphne Blue 60th Anniversary JM NGD

Post by SummerLeftMe » Sun Sep 23, 2018 3:49 pm

Okay so I have owned this beautiful guitar for 2 months, so not really a new guitar day.
First thing I did was change the tort pickguard to mint. :-*

I have a classic player jazzmaster to compare it to, and I much prefer the 60th.
The 60th neck feels surprisingly wider than the CP, and I wasn't sure if I would get a long with it, but now I love it.

I have not had to change the stock bridge or even play with saddle heights as it seems to be perfect as is. I noticed that the bridge does not rock because the bridge posts fit very snugly in the thimbles. This is totally welcome and an improvement to the standard rocking bridge, which never behaved for me, in my honest opinion. I rarely use the trem though, and if I do, its very subtle.

I really like the pickups and sound just like the AV65 pickups I put in my classic player jazzmaster. Has it been confirmed that the 60th uses the AV65 pickups, or are they new for this guitar?

Okay so the negative is the finish. I love the color. It is beautiful. However within a week of playing it, it had already started to yellow where my arm rests on the body. And since I live in Hawaii and it's hot as hell, I play frequently with no shirt on, so the belly cut as well is yellowing.
The white neck binding is under the finish so it is super yellowed. So pretty much any place in contact with skin. . .
I know this is a nitro finish, but my nitro AV65 sonic blue Jaguar has not yellowed like this over its 3ish years. Its very noticeable and I'm sure due to a different formulation of nitro finish. I wipe it down after I play and I try and polish it to maybe take it off a bit, but it's there and noticeable.

That is the only thing I don't like about this guitar.
I don't know a good photo hosting site I can use so I can get some pictures up so you all can see the yellowing.

Anyone else have problems with the 60th anniversary yellowing super fast?

Congratulations!

And they are the AV65 pickups.

And I've never heard of any guitar yellowing so fast. Maybe yours has a defective finish or something, because that's pretty weird.

Sweat can destroy and discolour finishes fast..depends on the paint formulation.

So here it was after a month of owning it. You can see on the arm contour a darker spot. It is hard to get the color right in photos but that's the yellowed area.

I love this color!

Okay and I just took these photos. This is 2 months after owning the guitar. You can see the yellowing is darker now.

Yellowing on arm contour and is creeping up over the horn. .

The heel has a lot of dark discoloration. You can see the binding is brownish too.

Belly cut.

Did you leave it out in the sun or play in a really smoky room?

The mint guard is a huge improvement.

No I don't smoke and it stays in my room all the time. I keep it out of the sun as well.

That is weird then, the only other thing I can think of is maybe sweat? Some people have pretty acidic sweat that can mess with the finish or strings.

Gotta ask, where did you get your mint green guard from? I want to put one on my 60th AV, as well

I'm pretty sure I got it from Sweetwater. It was a Fender AVRI 62 JM guard, so they don't make those anymore sadly.

Have you contacted Fender? I’m curious if they would refinish as I’m pretty sure this would fall under the limited warranty. At the very least I bet they would replace it. I had an AmPro JM that the collet sheared the tremolo arm off and they sent the shop I bought the guitar from an entirely new guitar for me. Apparently those replacement collets weren’t available for almost a year after they realeased those guitars.

First of all congrats! That's a beautiful guitar

I think the discoloration looks pretty cool but it shouldn't be happening that early...

Thanks so much, posted this question on another board and got no replies. Was it a perfect fit or did you have to file it or drill new holes or anything?

I will also contribute that I've had mine for about a month and although the finish has not yellowed as far as I can see, it is definitely very light - it's already chipped in a couple of places. The amount of contact needed to chip/dent the finish doesn't seem to be a whole lot. That could be good or bad, depending on who you are.

That is a really pretty JM, but I would be very upset with the discoloration. I know it isn't a popular opinion, but I would rather have thin poly than nitro. I don't think it makes any difference in tone on a solid body electric, based on 50+ years of owning and playing many with both finishes.
