Recent Fender discontinued Jags / anything new coming??

Post by MikeC » Mon Jun 26, 2017 2:38 pm

Looks like Fender recently discontinued both the Classic '60s Lacquer Jag and the Classic Player Jag SS.

This leaves no Mexican-made Jag model that is at or close to vintage specs.

Anyone know if Fender is planning to bring out some new models soon?? Or are they leaning on the Squier VM and hoping to drive upgrade sales to the American Pro and higher models?

The Mexican models were nice; the pricing of the Classic '60s was a bit close to the American Pro though, a guitar that I've promised to myself at some point. If there's a price dip on clearing out the Classics I may take the bait.

Where did you hear that they were discontinued?

They are not on the website, so that might be an indicator.

Some confusion might exist with the switch from rosewood fretboards to Pau Ferro. The switch is happening now and the new Pau Ferro models have different part numbers. The 60's Lacquer Jag with rosewood was 014-1230-740 and now with Pau Ferro is 014-1233-740. Notice the "3" at the end of the middle four digits. That's the fretboard material code. Fender has a model number now for this so it seems they will continue to make this model. The fretboard wood switch would actually be a great time to discontinue a model but Fender has this number as part of their available inventory right now. (They are out of stock for what it's worth. The RW still has limited stock.) Same will happen with all their Mexican-built guitars. Everything gets a new part number with the switch.
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

Welcome to the future.
Cork sniffers on suicide watch. I'm going to avoid TGP until this blows over. I get myself in trouble over there when this stuff happens. Richlite debate. Oh man. 3 warnings in one day. I wasn't even being an asshole about it, just people are so sensitive over there (and ALWAYS correct).

They're still on the UK Fender website, for now at least.

Some retailers over here are now listing multiple versions of the Mexican Jaguars, some with rosewood necks and some with pau ferro fingerboards.

e.g.: Andertons Link

Maybe the US website is currently being updated to reflect the new fingerboard specs?

Stuff disappears from the Fender site all the time even when they aren't discontinued. I would assume the fretboard change is the reason. The old stock is gone and the specs are different so they removed it from the website until the new stock with new specs is ready to go.

Plus their site gets goofy right before NAMM shows.

Fenders' Official Site is the goofiest it's ever been! Gibsons' isn't the goofiest anymore.
