'59/'67 Jazzmaster Restoration
Well, after recently completing my '62 Slabboard Danocaster Refinish restoration project, the bug hit me again. I've always wanted a Firemist or Aztec Gold B&B Jazzmaster and walked into something that was a perfect candidate. Here's what I'm starting with:
59JM_main by Shinoleum, on Flickr
It's a 1959 body with a 1967 neck. The headstock looks a little bit like a Coronado to me, and the decal is definitely not correct, but the neck stamp has a 19 which is the Jazzmaster neck code of 1967. Regardless, it looks nice and has a slightly rounder feel when compared to my 100% stock '66. The pickups appear to be from some time before 1964... They look like 1962 or 1963 to my eye. Electronics looks from the same period. The body has the original brass shielding tubs as well. The hardware appears to be slightly later 60's. Everything on this is from between 1959-1967.
The plan:
After receiving it today, I played it briefly and then completely dismantled it. It's already been sent over towards MJT for the refinish. I've used Danocaster before, but have always really enjoyed MJT's work as well. There are a lot of great refinishers but MJT has always had the best communication I've dealt with. They're going to strip the body carefully, then spray the body aztec gold as well as the face of the headstock. Should take about 8 weeks. When that's over with, I'll probably have a refret done. I've also got a staytrem for it. As for the pickguard, I need something custom. I want to do a mint guard from Spitfire but with the '59 drill pattern. Should be awesome. I'll be keeping this updated.
And with my other Jazzmasters ('66, '62, '59/'67, AV65)

Man that looked great as is. I know you're thought process, though. Gotta get what your heart is after! I just had MJT do a lake placid blue JM for me and it turned out EXCELLENT.

Wow, your before photo looks almost exactly like my MJT Jazzmaster minus the blocks and binding. I did a double take.

jeez, that guitar needs a 9 hole gold guard!
what is the date on the body? i have a 5-59 body and i wouldn't dream of putting on anything else than gold.
But to each, his-her own.
Good luck!

Looking good!
I'm not usually a fan of FMG, and maybe its the fall weather, but this one has a nice toasty hue.

Slow but steady - just needs a refret and to be put back together. It's going to look so killer:
