Headstock sizes?????

Post by lamf37 » Thu Apr 28, 2016 10:35 pm

Can anyone tell me if the headstock size on an early 60's Mustang was the same as a Duo Sonic or Musicmaster?
I know the mustang became larger in later years but did the original model have the same size?

Wasn't it the same size all the time? Don't know anything about mustangs with small headstocks...

Can this site help you? http://www.fendermustangstory.com/

Mustang's were released in mid-1964 with the enlarged headstock that would follow on other models I think. Duo's and MM's enlarged around '64 in line with the rest of the range that would all become large by '66ish.

Not necessarily. There are some small variations. I will try to post some pics later....
I have 3 guitars / necks from 1965 (Mustang, Musicmaster and Duo Sonic), all with the same scale length and all from 1965. All have different headstock sizes somehow....

Edit / update:
All are "B" necks with 22 frets, etc, with stamps from the later half of 65,

the Musicmaster II is obviously the typical CBS style example (although has the same neck stamp as the Duo Sonic II neck).
Now, the Mustang and the Duo Sonic II look similar but the headstock curves and shapes are not 100% identical, always 1-2 mm's difference.

I know, not the best pics but I am in a hurry...

Cheers lads, I was always convinced this area at the top of the head became enlarged in the later
part of the 60's.
I just wondered if the original run of Mustangs had the same smaller less pronounced area like the
original musicmasters and duo-sonics.
