Have you checked to see if the original finish is underneath the inlay? Hell, the whole guitar might be an inlay. Might want to do some more sanding...

Although future me has a good feeling that the original sunburst is still under that spray painted white finish, so I say strip the future paint job!

I'm sure you aren't thinking about selling the guitar anytime soon, but in the event you do have to sell, black will be a lot easier to sell than a metal flake.
