No love for a blue pickguard?
http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/eq/gtr18.html
But yeah, in my opinion pearl pickguards on white bodies tend to look dope, man. Are you gonna go rosewood for the neck?

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
I've considered a pale blue pearl pickguard once...
But now I'm stuck with the white on white finish.
As for the neck, I don't really know.
I wanted a maple neck as I don't have any guitar with a maple neck...I also thought it might fit the pale look of the whole guitar.
Now I don't really care.
All that really matters to me is to find a thin neck...don't mind the fretboard, or the decal, or the year...

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
Update!!
I've ordered a mid 60's white pearl pickguard on ebay.
But for some reason(s) I received a solid white '66 pickguard instead.
After many messages with the seller (who was'nt helpful at all), I decided to keep it...for the time being.
It actually is a very nice pickguard, fits the body perfectly and is already a bit yellowed...so why not?
This wasn't what I wanted but maybe it is how it was supposed to be afterall (this is me trying to reassure myself )
For some reason I can't catch the yellowing grade on pics:
And it looks kind of mint on the guitar:
But I think I like it quite much.
Maybe I will wait for another white pearl to show up, or maybe I will keep this one...idk
The pickguard is already enduring a special sun treatment. I'll create a new thread if I got results.
I really do hope I will
Anyway,
I will receive the pickups, a '71 bridge and the pickup covers quite soon...
It really has begun!!

I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
Thanks guys!!
I'm already not thinking of having a pearl one anymore
I received a new addition to the project today, a '71 bridge:
In pretty good shape, with some rust, as I like...

I received the cream pickup covers today...
I'm not sure it is a great choice though.
I might use a white set instead, while waiting for a vintage set at a decent price.
It's hard to imagine the result without the pickguard...but it's currently screwed on a wood board for sunbathes

New Parts Day!!!
60's trem unit (I guess it's a '69):
And a '69 Mustang neck (used to be red comp), with stripped headstock (I will match it to the body ) and a great back with lots of wear:
I also had a used control plate

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
Also,
I did some "does it look good like this" combinations...
Several options with cream pickup covers, white pickups covers, yellow knobs, cream knobs and white knobs (Coronado style knobs )
I honestly don't know what to think...even if I admit I have one or two favorites, but I won't tell you which they are:D .
Think I need your wise opinions here!!

Cream and cream is my #1 actually
Final New Parts Day today:
You know what those are.
The tuners are '65s.
I'm currently trying to work on the neck...I'm hoping to post some pics today.
I'm also waiting for a new 70's decal from HNB.
After that (and some soldering obviously), the guitar will be done !!!

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
I think I'm very happy with how the "neck refin" turned out.
It's not a usual pro job, and I didn't use the usual tools and products.
I used some off-white paint, for your kichen or bedroom walls...I did two coats with it.
I sanded the whole thing and I get to my girlfriend's grand-uncle, the one who helped me with the stupid Weddrop.
We used some yellow tinted lacquer. I applied it with a lacquer pad (??), or wad (??)??
Anyway, this is what he used to use to give some patina on the furnitures he used to make and sell.
I applied several coats in 15 minutes (it gets dry very quickly).
And the result is AWESOME !!!!!!!
(sorry, the pics are a bit dark)
Now I just need to have the decal and to overspray the headstock with one or two nitro clear coats and I'll be done with it.
I didn't think I could match the headstock so easily, and it took me 45 minutes to do this in an afternoon.
Ok then,
Matched !!!!! :

That looks great! I'm a fan of the white guard! I think I'd do black covers personally but if it's between white or cream, I vote white.
Look forward to seeing this all stung up!

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
Thanks!!
I went another route actually, for the pickup covers...
It's not betwwen white or cream now, it's between white and cream.
I sanded the covers and apply a medium oak beeswax (??), you know, for furnitures, to tint the wood...
It worked pretty well:
I'm just waiting for the decal now, then I will string her up !!!!

Re: out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject
I'd choose black covers too (black Jag knobs too but I'm a purist).
That's a great collection of parts though. Enjoy the final few stages of the build!
