out of the blue OW Mustang restoproject - DONE !!!!

Post by raphaël » Fri Feb 26, 2016 3:41 am

Hey all,

Now that the DS is nearly completed, I've come to the idea of starting building the guitar of my dream, a partcaster JM, as I don't own, or ever had owned, or ever played one.

But I ran into that '76 Mustang on ebay...and I couldn't resist :D :fp: !!!

So, no JM but a Mustang instead!!!
The JM will have to wait :'(

pics now!!!!!

This body compile all I've ever wanted concerning old OW finish.
I really am in love with that body.

Holy god, that's perfect olympic white aging craziness there.. Subscribed!

let me be the one who asks the real question here: mint or tort?

I think the general consensus will be a Spitfire guard.... I can see one in a solar flare pattern on it already

Thanks guys!!

Answering the question will be such a disappointment for some of you :D
Dare I say I think about a very very very very yellowed white pearl pickguard on it?
With cream Coronado knobs, cream or very aged white pickup covers and white switches too??

I'm not that into tort.
Plus OW + tort is the way to go, so I might try another way.

But mint is a good idea!!!!
Don't know, will see ;) !!

:D

I think (as it will probably take some time to complete that guitar) that I will purchase a new and shiny white pearl guard asap.
Then I will screw it on wood and "stuck" the whole thing behind a window for a couple of month, maybe half a year  ;D , to get a natural aging with the UV's from the sun.
It appears to be a pretty fast and convincing aging.
Let's try it!!

Actually that might be the most faithful aging process, as you can definitely see the evidence on guitars that were put on display in shop windows.
But actually the thing is, there seems to be a vast variety of plastics that are/were used to make pickguards of, and some don't react to this process at all.

Anyway, good luck, raphaël, be sure to post your results! :)

Wow, that body is GORGEOUS! :? :? :?

Why not start with an aged pearl guard and place it on a window to increase the yellowing?

Good man!! A nice aged white pearl would be quite lovely.
This is an excellent rectangle

Thanks all!!

I think I will wait for the right vintage pearl pickguard then...and increase the yellowing.
But I might buy a new one too, experimenting with this start to tickling me :shifty:

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more I read what all of you think about it, the more I think this is a good choice...the white pearl pickguard ;)

Btw, anyone knows where I could source some aged white or cream Mustang pickup covers?

awesome project.
i love white+white+white, all yellowing at different rates!

I came close to buying a body just like that, maybe the same one. US ebay?
(Christopher, also)
I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.
