'71 Mustang body
I recently bought this body on ebay and I was originally just planning to put a neck on it and play it as is, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if I should try to remove the sparkle paint since it is most likely a red Compstang underneath. I experimented with the sparkle paint a little bit in the area under the vibrato and it seems to kind of flake off fairly easily, but so does the red, so I stopped immediately. Is it worth the time and effort? And if so, what would it take to remove the sparkle paint without harming the original finish? Is that even possible?

Comp Red is sexy as hell, so for me it'd be worth it. Pulling it off might be a bit too brute, but with some careful sanding (fine sandpaper, sanding block), you should get there... But it will take time!

That poor thing got fabulously abused!
Wetsanding with a high grit should help you eat trough the top layers without damaging the paint underneath, just go slow and be careful for sandtroughs.

yes cosine on wetsanding
Use a block and quite a high grit- 1500 or so. What you want is to essentially scrub the top layer off, not sand through it as you might imagine

I'm a big fan of unearthing original finishes

Re: '71 Mustang body
If u wanted to see if the og finish was really there take a fresh razor blade and SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY shave away the sparkulz down by the strap button like i did with mine. that picture shows after I found the stripe and went nutz.
It's somewhat out of the way if there ends up being bare wood. Would be covered by your strap anyway.
Otherwise if the excavating yields positive findings in my thread I listed the steps/grits/process i went through to bring orange back to life. Takes time but it's extremely rewarding in the end.

Re: '71 Mustang body
hmm…. well, I just might try it. The only thing is I don't have a whole lot of free time on my hands these days, so it would definitely be a long, slow process, but like most of you said, it would probably be worth it. I've never wet sanded anything before, so I guess I'll be learning as I go. I hope I don't mess it up. I'll try to post any updates if and when I start the process. Thanks for the tips.

The nice thing in this case is that the color contrast of the white over the red will make it easy to see when you are getting close to the bottom of the white layer. This should make it fairly easy not to over-sand into the red. When you are working with colors that don't have that much contrast, it's a more difficult proposition. In this case, I would definitely try to recover that original red finish.

What the... Wow, that's totally bizarre. I see that the seller has zero feedback. Any idea how to report this listing/seller?will wrote:How'd your guitar get to Russia?

Haha, thanks! I reported the listing, but I just clicked on the link to see if it was still active and it said it sold and a best offer was accepted. I hope they get their money back.
