Did a luthier damage your decal, though????

Danocaster just asked me to rough it up with some 400 grit to give the new nitro something to grab onto. Not a real "sand down"

And yes... Now that I'm looking at old pictures.... They absolutely did! WTF!! I guess Chicago Fretworks is not to be trusted with vintage instruments... Is there any course of action that makes sense?

Oh maan that sucks. You have before and after pics... but even if they'd give you the money for the repair back... what's a destroyed vintage decal worth?

Once witnessed a nut install on my 64JM... the luthier filed happily away and right into the headstock. I almost ripped his head off.

didnt some original Shoreline gold guitars fade to a colour resembling Aztec gold?

Shoreline gold would look great with a natural headstock.

Whoa. i would be super-pissed.
I would go their location and ask to speak to the manager immediately.

^ This hurts my heart. I'm so sorry about this! I feel bad recommending them as an option for you. I've never had work done there, but they seem like a top notch establishment. With such a presence on social, I'm sure they'll be quick to help make things right. Even still it won't bring back a damaged vintage decal.

Awesome guitar! I agree with others in this thread - go nuts refinishing the body, but leave the headstock face alone. Even throwing on a reissue neck at some point would be better than stripping the original logos unnecessarily.

We'll see what they do. I'm still upset - that being said, the body is on its way to Danocaster so things will be quiet for the next couple months!

Yeah, I don't think there's any coming back from that. It definitely swayed me away from taking my guitars in though. Thats just lousy, whether it was an accident or whatever it was. Just unprofessional to not take care with a vintage neck. I mean, how hard would it have been to cover the decal while it was being worked on. Ugggh. Sorry, don't mean to stir the pot but it still makes me mad as well.

Hopefully a Dano refin will make it all the better!

Yes! Danocaster just finished up the body. He's going to be shipping it with my Tele build in a few weeks when that's done. Should be getting pictures soon....

I love your guitar, but I'm not impressed with the work Chicago Fretworks did on the tuner holes.

Progress!

Dan has finished the refin and it should be heading my way shortly. He said there was something wrong with the new nitro adhering to the oil or whatever else was on there, and was not 100% satisfied with the work although he (and I) thinks it looks great. Being the great guy that he is, he offered it up to me at absolutely no cost. That's right. For free. But I went ahead and covered his out of pocket cost because that was so cool of Dan. This restoration has not gone as expected with the headstock mess-up and the Nitro not going on 100% perfect, but I think this will be an incredible instrument when it's done. With the money I saved on the refin, I'll go for a good refret! I'm going to play this thing into the ground. Should look super nice with the faded '62 tort.
