Shell pink JM restoration - 8: done.
i bought this "'65 jm body in ultra-thin shell pink nitro finish" a while ago and was a bit dissapointed to say the least.
but anyway, i decided to try and restore it - i paid too much & learned my ebay-lesson...
cavities
the ultra-thin finish and ergonomical contours
tummy cutout

Re: Pinky restoration - the horror
I'll hold off chiming in as far as authenticity until I see the stripped body...
But I will say this in regard to the refin: Yuck!

My first JM, a 1966, had a deep tummy cut just like that, and a similar quality refin, only in salmon pink instead of shell pink!

wow... how did he apply the finish? with a 6" paintbrush?
59 and 60's have deep, long belly contours. show us more once it's stripped....

Wow. The "ultra-thin" finish was just an excuse to say "I didn't have enough shell pink to cover the original and din't bother priming.". It looks like it was Sunburst before.

Other than a quicky crap finish it looks like a decent guitar with no horrible routing. Strip it, prep it right and give it a good finish. You'll spend $75 on parts and a lot of lbor of love and you'll have a great guitar.

Re: Pinky restoration - the horror
that is indeed my intention - at first i was pissed as hell but remembering reading j.c.powys' "in spite of: a philosophy for everyone" i just thought: "fuck it i'll make this a nice one"jetset wrote: Other than a quicky crap finish it looks like a decent guitar with no horrible routing. Re: Pinky restoration - 2: stripped
here are some pics from the stripping process - i started out with nitro thinner, but i only have a small bottle with quite expensive stuff, and it took too long, so i used some universal stripper.
that stuff was really scary - i left the window and door of the workshop open all the time and smeared on, let sit for half an hour, removed the gunk with a spatula and wiped the rest off with newspaper. took me two evenings to get it off.
geez:
bad:
real bad:
burn marks and wood filler everywhere.
but i won't let it bring me down, no way.
i'll work on it until it is shell pink. ultra thin.

Re: Pinky restoration - 2: stripped
Any idea what the original finish was? It looked like Sunburst to me. Obviously that may not be feasible with the burnmarks though. Looks ugly now, but hey; it gets ugly at many stages in the process.

Re: Pinky restoration - 2: stripped
It sure looks like sunburst in the circuit / neck cavities.
It is a mix of pink/green/blue with sunburst underneath in the trem cavity.

Re: Pinky restoration - 2: stripped
circuit cavities - i had to drill out the bridge post thimbles that sat in there... very strange things, hammered in, not removable with iron and pliers.
these strange thimbles started to rotate with the drill and enlarged the holes (which actually had the correct dimensions btw), so i had to enlarge them
by a good measure and filled them.
pic of a strangethimble with enlarged hole
adapter piece i made
fits...
neck cavity (contours corrected with filler... this pic should come later, but it's the best i have of the neck cavity)
trem cavity - cleaned up a bit. it seems like it was originally not routed deep enough, the front half has been lowered by about 2 mm to be able to house the trem.
it looks horrible... maybe i'll give the whole bottom an overhaul with the router or ask the guys at the workshop if they'll mill it out cleanly... i just hate to hold fast rotating sharp objects in my hands.

Ditto, I get a little paranoid, that's why I wear a face shield and get REAL CLOSE, so I can be uber-careful.FUZZ_KING wrote:i just hate to hold fast rotating

Re: Pinky restoration - 2: stripped
last thing you need is dain's amazing offset eyeball mod (who was very lucky) or something to the effect of 'look mom no hands'. i once saw a guy's half arm ripped off at a factory, i don't even want to think of it.Ryan wrote:Ditto, I get a little paranoid, that's why I wear a face shield and get REAL CLOSE, so I can be uber-careful.FUZZ_KING wrote:i just hate to hold fast rotating

This will be amazing! Nice work so far. I've seen worse brought back to former glory.
Great pics too of the progress.

Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?
