i felt ashamed at not having done this project myself. Looking forward to seeing it done. If i didn't have a 4 months old I would have done it myself ;)
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

By all means, I didn't realize that the orange was fairly intact under that black...I would wetsand starting with maybe 800 and then move to 1000, 1200, etc as the orange starts appearing...

Salivating as we speak for this one...

This^^^ Wet sand that black top coat off (very carefully, and very even) and then spray it with a gloss or semi gloss?

hey andy - i feel ya man. i'm stretching myself super thin with this task - my lil dude will be 8mo next wednesday!
wife is a night nurse so once i have him in bed i have 2hrs (give or take) all to myself. ended up keeping the body with me at work so i can peck away at it over lunches.

the original finish is showing some honest play wear through the stripe. glad to see this as it will definitely see MOAR action once completed.
slowing wiping away with some warm water, wee bit o mild detergent and 800g. camera was not cooperating with the lighting

and a better shot of the headstocks finish 'texture'

after seeing the wear through the stripe i think this will most definitely happen.

edit: after looking closely at the past pictures it seems i took a bit of the stripe off during my wet sanding this will NOT happen anymore.
got a wee too excited with my progress and applying a bit too much pressure. calm yourself down son. calm. down.

So awesome, its looking amazing. Its like ripping away the first corner of a present christmas morning, so exciting to see the comp stripe peeking up at you from underneath!

depending on how worn the body looks underneath, i'd be tempted to leave the headstock as is and just have an nice worn in comp orange player!

you have no idea how hard it is NOT to go find an obsolete corner of our warehouse and go hide, sanding away. wish i had more paid vaca available to burn.

i might take some 1000 or 1500 to the headstock to smooth out the texture a bit & remove some of the black that's still there. don't think i'll use the repro decal i have for it. like you and others have said, keep this beat beauty as original as possible. maybe a thin coat of nitro clear once everything is as it should be to protect the goods.

back to work... lunch... sanding... work... yeah work...

Good job, some patience can save old guitars from bad mistakes. My les paul 55-77 special took a lot of work from my luthier, but patience got rid of all those awful 80's decisions.
