putting project Jagzuar on the backburner. i ended up with that competition orange neck (sprayed black, then removed) from OffYourFace. and after a few more pm's to panoramic the body is en route. thank you gentlemen. i promise to do this poor soul some justice and return it to its former orange glory.

i already have a number of the parts - MOP guard that came off a comp blue body. f-back cream key tuners been hanging on to for a long time and don’t remember where they originated. Same with the control plate, knobs, a bridge and switches. Pots & jack will be new. Found some covers on ebay that looked match the age/wear of the guard. Pat No trem assembly came courtesy of FenderBob - kudos to you sir.

The only missing parts would be the pickups and a neck plate. I’ll more-than-likely have a s/n plate made with a rando 1969 number. as for pickups, until i find a correct set i plan on throwing a 69/70 stock stang in the neck and try to find a rail of sorts ala cobain. like this sexy blue guy viewtopic.php?f=41&t=70957&hilit=competition

have contemplated stripping the black paint off the body myself. i want to do this right and a ‘professional’ could also address the sad state the headstock is in at the same time. had thought about contacting MJT guitars to see if they'd be willing to work on the strip/resto for me, but not sure. thoughts & suggestions welcome.

there will be many progress pics to come. still waiting on a few things to land. the key part - body - being one of them. Just wanted to get this posted to start things off. good times ahead.

Personally, I think the original finish is the best way to go if at all possible. I thought that was the whole idea here, to save it? A worn and F'd up original finish is still much cooler than a refin, especially with the story that goes with this one.

oh yes dear lord ample buckets of yes. as original as i can keep it is the plan. the headstock is my main concern.
different levels of paint have been removed when the stripping agent was applied. but i have yet to see the body - supposed to have shipped last tuesday.....
so until that lands one can only speculate what will happen when stripping it's finish.

i do NOT think i'll use citristrip or anything like that. some very soft sanding to remove the black and then buff out the og finish underneath. my plan so far.

guess since i cant work on anything until the body lands i'm getting the cart ahead of the horse a bit. but getting my ducks in a row beforehand is not a bad thing either.

what is the story with this, DIY refin sold for parts via ebay and that's it or is there more ?

The best results I've had stripping oversprays has been using like 1500 grit paper, nice and wet. That was on a pretty thin overspray, and as I started breaking through it felt as if i was almost knocking off tiny particles, rather than danding through a layer

You have to be patient with this sort of thing... It's very achieveable, but any time I've tried to skip ahead* it's ended badly

*ie use any kind of stripper

thanks for the info mgeek. this is the route i'll end up going. seems the safest way to do it w/o totally fucking things up.

postman just delivered the goods as i was heading to lunch. assembled the tuners/headstock and unboxed the body. the black is laid on pretty thin.
a fresh razor blade and a light scraping motion yields proof that underneath the black lay da sexy













pictures taken with my iphone. i need to break out the better camera. hard to show state the headstock is really in... the texture of the paint & clear.
and not sure why but photobucket needs to get their rotate image shit together. apologies for the upside down pics.

By all means, I didn't realize that the orange was fairly intact under that black...I would wetsand starting with maybe 800 and then move to 1000, 1200, etc as the orange starts appearing...
