1972 Mustang Refin REFIN'd!
So i've had sort of a love/hate relationship with my mustang. I put it up for sale, i take it down, i try to love it, i decide i hate it, etc. So in an effort to love it more (and add some value when i inevitably decide i hate it again haha) i've recently been putting some money in. I decided to get her re-fretted, which obviously is a great move on some of these beat guitars, and i debated and decided to indeed refin my refin. Heres the brief history:
When i got her, she looked like this:
Sort of a weird old spotty just generally gray finish. Had strange dark spots, was well bumped and beat up on the back. I hated that tort on there and it fit poorly so i sourced a 60s guard and then it looked like this:
A definite improvement IMO! The finish was still just sort of flat and lifely and bland, but i liked it since it was an old refin.
Then I fell in love. Way hard in love. with this!
Elektrovacs Firemist gold duosonic! Good lord, what a beautiful guitar! So there was the inspiration, and off we go!
In an attempt to do the refinish on the cheap, i wanted to stick with locally source-able acrylic lacquer, which unfortunatley led me to a color a bit lighter (more of an aztec gold really, but still lovely!) i rounded up my supplies, tried to wait out some of the horrendous NE Ohio humidity, and went for it!
First i stripped...So weird to watch this happen. Dark lacquer coat came off first, then i had to work on the lighter primer beneath. It seems this was comp red initially.
Then i had the body clean! This one obviously wasnt a burst! haha There were quite a few gouges and nicks and things so i did my best to fill those spots, most of which proved impossible for my admittedly limited wood working skills, and truthfully i didnt really want to loose all the bumps and scars this guitar has accumulated over its lifetime
Once i was sanded and as filled i was gonna get, i wiped down with mineral spirts, let it dry, and primed
Then color went on.
Then some clear
I waited a bit less time than i would due to NOT wanting a perfect high gloss mirror like shine, but rather something that would be a bit dull, a bit more "aged."
Got her all sanded and polished up last night!
Glamour shots from today! Indoor and outdoor!
I didnt touch the neck or headstock as it is just so nicely aged!

Damn that looks good! MOP guard looks hot on there
your paranoia must be weapons-grade.

Wow, nice job! That came out really nicely.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

OMG that looks amazing! Great work!
It goes so well with the guard and dark rosewood.
I dig this so much more than the original grey / silver.

Re: 1972 Mustang Refin REFIN'd!
Thanks so much guys! I'm pretty happy with how it came out myself. I do wish the color were a little darker but I think it looks pretty good anyway!
The guard that's on it is a 60s guard, which is why it's so nicely yellowed and matches the golden hue nicely! I don't have that tort guard any more but it didn't really fit anyway. I'm not really one for pearloid but I sometimes it's just right!
