My '64/'65 Jaguar parts project

Post by OffYourFace » Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:28 am

I got the Music Master neck from Doug and the refin'd '63-'64 body from andrewaward (super nice finish!).    The master control plate w/ knobs & electronics is from '64, the switch plate and rhythm control are AVRI.  The neck plate is a '76 F plate with numbers.
I've never really played a Jaguar that I liked and had no idea what to expect.  There was no way I was gonna shell out big bucks for something i had my doubts about....
All I can say is that this marriage of parts is magical!  I couldn't believe it!  :-*    This could turn into a new favorite.  It's got way more sustain than any jag i've played.  I have a set of AVRI pickups but this deserves a set of Novaks one day soon.  The tailpiece is from '65 but with a new trem claw and AVRI bar.
The only thing that sucks is the '63 tort pickguard i got from ebay has shrunk too much.  I don't think I can use it, huge bummer! :(  So I need a p/g soon.  andrew has the original p/g but i can't afford it right now.

Yes! a really nice refin burst!

Couldn't you just needle-file th Pickguard to fit? I know some on the forum have done that (Doug/Fullerplast IIRC).
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Wow! Thats NICE!

I can make just about any pickguard fit again, just ask zhivago.

His '61 was about the most warped and shrunk guard I'd ever seen and it turned out great.

Just file out ALL the openings, enlarge the screw holes a bit, and sometimes you have to drill the bridge holes out a bit larger. It will fit and look and "normal". Good luck!

Very, very nice project...

That loos fantastic!  I'm building a Jaguar from any random parts too, so it's cool to see someone else having good luck with the concept.

I'm usually not into sunburst too much but I agree, this one is awesome !  8)

Surely you need a CIJ guard on there and then you've pretty much covered all bases  ;)

This does look great - I love it when refinished/parts guitars look so immaculate. Good luck with the guard issue.

Thanks guys, I'm really excited about this one!  :-*

The guard will fit, it'll just take lots of careful work.  Most Jags always have a gap between the p/g & the main control plate.  What bums me out about this one is that there'll be a gap on the left side of the switch plate.  See the photos, I think you'll see what I mean (#2).
The bridge holes will have to be... offset  :D  to work.  It's gonna be awesome....!!!

Man, tonight is the Boston Music Awards.  It's gonna be lame.  Extreme, Bobby Brown (yep), and JoJo will be performing.  Joey Kramer will be the host and Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel) will be... well, a guest speaker.  My band has been nominated for 3 awards so we gotta go.  I honestly rather stay home and finish this Jaguar...  I'm not expecting us to win anything and I'm not in a 'Party' mood either.  Oh well, I took Monday off from work :-)  I hope to wrap up this thread by Monday evening :)

Have a good night guys!

Is there no way you can reposition the switch plate slightly by toothpicking the holes and re-drilling to the side?

That's a weird bunch of acts on the bill - the last time Extreme and Bobby Brown were in any way relevant/successful was before JoJo was even born...

:-* it.      The gap gives it vintage authenticity and character.  ...just beautiful as it is...awesome build.

It is truly stunning and beautiful, and maybe it's just the lighting, but I actually kinda liked it better without the pickguard.  Man, that's weird.  ???

By the way, who did that awesome re-fin?

No pickguard reminds me of Jaco  :D

The guard is a very nice tort though! The redrill holes to reposition switch plate was done on my AVRI jag to fit a vintage guard on.
Times change.  Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky?  Now it grows hair!  We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger
