One suggestion - use oxalic acid solution on the "dirty" parts of the scalloping. It should bleach the wood back to its natural colour. That way you can sand it less before refretting.
I know the use of oxalid acid on wood to clear/clean it , but the fretboard would still be scaloped, and I don't want it to be.

So today, let's start to plane the fingerboard.

When removing the nut, after cutting the varnish with a blade, a small part of wood left behind the nut ...

So let's glue it...

Start to work on the fingerboard, which is thick and won't need to glue some more wood on it to level the surface.

Image

Some dots left, not enough material left after planing the fingerboard. I will replace them soon.

Image

Some small marks of scaloping left, but might disapear with the final sanding.

Image

I've tried to plane the fingerboard removing less wood as possible, trying to keep the original radius :

The nut cavity, which I'll have to work on too :

Some fews pics to see the fingerboard thickness :

So now, I need a radius sanding block, let's build one.

Image

1°) cut the wood block in two :

Image

2°) planing the the two pieces, then fit them with clamps, and give them a 10/12/15° angle :

Image

Gluing the wood blocks :

Image

3°)On another wood block, I trace the radius I want, then cut precisely on the line, to obtain a cheap "scraper" :

Image

4°) Enfin, avec un mélange de colle acrylique et de poussière de bois, on badigeonne la face concave de la cale obtenue, et on passe le "racloir" pour obtenir la cale à radius désirée.

Endly, with a mix of acrylic glue and wood dust, I fill the wood block then use the scraper to obtain a concave side.

That is the cheaper radius sanding block you can find, but it works good

The home-made radius sanding block is ready to receive the sanding paper, which is glued on it.

Her's the result

Some dings are still visible, well, they might be less visible when the decal will be glued.

amazing! I love how you just do it, instead of taking it to someone or asking a million questions. I wish I was more like that! Looks great!

I'm also really impressed with the way you've gone at this, makes me think I could approach a restoration like this myself !

I think I'd have thought that neck was at the point of no return with those nasty scallops - but what a transformation!
Looking forward to seeing the next stage

What colour are you thinking of for the body ?

Obviously anything is better than that green....

Well, I'll post some new pics of the restoration in the next few days. New Job, new town, new home brakes me in the project, but now I have a little more time to work on this kind mustang ;)

I let the body like it is, I like this cream color with red wine stripe on it.

I've worked on the fingerboard, which is now leveled and varnished. I have to clean the fret feet slots ans fret the fingerboard...

Pics comes in a few days, I've forgotten them on a friend's computer...

Well, a bit of fretwork today... I've received some fret wire ; I've chosen medium frets to fit my mustang's fretboard

Image

Half an hour later, the frets are in place. They need to be cut and sanded...

Image

Sanding's over. A final polishing of the frets before installing the headstock logo, then final varnish

Image
Image

Do you know a custom head decal maker so I can order a "westminster" logo?
