I'm not sure if I'm digging the pickguard, I think it might need to be brown tort or mint....

It's together! Congrats, man!
I like the pickguard on its own, but it does lack contrast. You might be right - perhaps a browner shade of tort might help 'offset' things.

Doug - didn't you do a dakota with a darker early 60s tort for someone a few years back?? I remember that one looks super great, the way the two shades or red interacted...

Re: 1959 Jazzmaster Project FINISHED!!! Pg 6
Why yes! Yes I did...
It was Justin's (daydreamdelay). I bought it as a poo brown fleaBay special. It was original except for a tunamatic and the stripped finish. I put all the parts on a white refin '63 body (except the tuna, of course) and sold it to Justin while I refinned this body. When it was finished, we traded bodies. He did the assembly.
This Fiesta JM turned out really nice as well!

Yeah I think that's the solution, and the lack of contrast is what I feel is lacking, if you remember originally this guitar was supposed to be sunburst...

or go mint... but good luck finding a vintage mint JM guard. No one has one of those.

It's actually been a bit of a curse, that mint guard. It's made choosing a color for my refin a really difficult one, as you well know.
I think there were instances of one-off white pickguards prior to '62. But yes, conventionally, mint guards were '62 and after.
When was Fiesta red introduced???

I've red about fiesta being around in the 50s but I've also read it was a color called Fullerton red....kosmonautmayhem wrote:...just poking fun.friendshipmaster wrote:You do!!! I could be wrong but mint didn't come out til 62 along with matching headstocks....kosmonautmayhem wrote:I agree. =)

Wow I've never heard of Forrest red?DocCarlson wrote:You're thinking of Forrest Red. It's one of the rarest pre-CBS colors... they were going to call it White Red but that was already copyrighted by Gretsch.

Fiesta Red was a '56 Ford Thunderbird color, so very possible as a true custom color in the late 50s.
