XII restoration BMM (PORN now included!)
OK, I swapped my sunburst '66 XII for another stripped '66 XII. I had paid about $2300 US for the sunburst original, and got the stripped guitar for my original plus $1200 cash (not bad, I think - it will cost about $350 for the refin so I'll be into the stripped/refin'd XII for about $1550. I'm a player, not a collector, so the refin actually works better for me).
So that leaves me with a restoration project, basically a no-guilt mathicng-HS refin (headstock is stripped, no decal). Here's the pic:
It will look like this when it is complete:
It's going to be a few months, but I'll post pics along the way.

Yeah, that colour rocks! I was never a fan of it because of the way it looks in catalgues, but now that i've seen better online pics of the burgandy, i'm developing quite a fetish for it.

Re: XII restoration
Yeah funny thing too is I think BM is really what I call an offset color. Meaning it is a color that really only works on the offset style guitars. I dont like BM on Strats and Teles... just does not work on them.

Re: XII restoration
Hi!
Why all the trouble to end up with the same guitar with a different color.
Those original XII's are so cool.
I would have kept the original one and bought that project to have 2 XII's.
I don't judge.It's just a personal tought.
The main thing is to keep on having fun with guitars!!!!
Best regards!

I"m not a collector, but a player (and an old one at that!). I bought the original XII in kind of a panic because I couldn't find a fixer in good enough playing shape. I finally found a good playing fixer, and the guy who had it IS into vintage original instruments. Money was also an issue. I got his fixer plus $1200 for my original, so even after a pro refin on the fixer I'm still way ahead on the money front. And he got his original vintage XII. We both ended up happy and with what we wanted.
In the past (like before the 2001 stock market crash, when my 401K became a 101K), I had a vintage Candy Red Bass VI. It had many issues, but I was told over and over that I'd ruin it if I did work to make it truly playable (refret, plane the fingerboard, etc.). I ended up selling it for a good price at the time (but really low considering how much they'er going for now).
I personally think it's kind of stupid to have a guitar that you can't play, at least in my mind (I"m not judging anyone else).
Bottom line, I'd rather have a great guitar I can use and do what I consider normal maintenance and repair work, without worrying about affecting the collectible value. I'd rather someone else have the vintage correct guitar that appreciates it more than I do. And yes, the guy I swapped with wants the guitar for himself, he's not planning on selling it to make a buck like we see with so many parted out guitars on Ebay lately. I actually look for fixers now so I can rescue and restore them rather than seeing them parted out (where a bunch of people each get one part, and a whole guitar never lives again).
But you're right, I would have kept both - IF - I could have afforded to. I've got some other restoration projects in the works (Bass V), and I don't have unlimited funds.
I hope you understand my position.

Re: XII restoration
FYI, just sold enough stuff here in the "For Sale" section to pay for the refin, so the project is now officially underway!

Re: XII restoration (REFIN done - shipped!)
Got the call today that the refin is done and I should be looking for the brown truck (UPS) later this week. I can't wait! I'll post pics of the refin'd body and neck and then will post assembly photos.
As a reminder, here's the goal:

Re: XII restoration
Fantastic - did all the parts come with it or are you having to find some bits elsewhere?
