Re: 1963 Jag Sonic Blue
Added tinted lacquer, but to get an even coat, it needed more than it should. Now I'm going to try wet sanding it back to the same "green" as the headstock

Wow!
After a good wet sanding treatment that's gonna be a killer!
I'm a real sucker for "custom-blue-coloured-turned-greenish-offsets"!

Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Re: 1963 Jag Sonic Blue
It's not working...As I sand, the colour reverts to bright blue immediatly, instead of fading gradually. The body now is various shades of green, which IMO looks shit, so I'm gonna take it all off, shoot another can of clear, and let nature take it's course.
Shame tho, looked like it was working for a while.

i thought it was a great match even without the sanding! if you're going to have another go maybe just a lighter spray of tint?

Nice work!
Too bad you have to shoot the clear again though. IMO, that tinted clear is hard to work with, it gets too yellow very quickly. Its almost as though you have to just mist it, then flow it back out with a thicker coat of regular clear.
I agree.. it was a pretty decent match to begin with. You'll nail it next time...

...ya it's way easier to control to put a tinge of amber into plain old clear and just build up coats. The reranch stuff at least, is a little strong right out of the can.fullerplast wrote: Nice work!

Re: 1963 Jag Sonic Blue
god...id never have suggested wet sanding such a thin coat...far too aggressive..you needed a very light liquid compound say 1500-3000..even then it would be very difficult to get that even..it was just too heavily tinted to start with.

Yeah - what I really need is a gun and compressor. May try to borrow one...
The tinted clear is too strong for an amateur like me.

I think you need to carfully compound off that tinted coat and thin it right down maybe with some more clear or some thinners or both just to make the tint really weak..then you could spray on a decent coat without it being too tinted..if it was not tinted enough you can then just spray another coat on and so on..

I think that the first try was pretty good. It's going to be awesome when it's done.

don't give up this beauty!
I bought my own compressor and a gun, then mixed the tinted clearcoat myself - very lightly tinted, it was then quite easy (for being the first time) to get the right shade of yellow - this made the tint layer thicker too and was more easy to wet sand the right amount (with 2000 grit paper) for the wanted result where needed.
Here in Sweden (where everything is expensive as hell) I got a comp. and a decent gun for roughly $150. You can't bring down a house with an airdriven jackhammer with that comp though....
