Re: 1963 Jag Sonic Blue
It seems it's a 2-piece: the second piece of wood is at the bottom (considering the orientation of the picture). There's a visible line the goes from the lower horn extremity that "cuts in two" the control cavity on the left (and halfway between the trem rout and the lower bottom of the body). At least, that's what it looks like to me.OffYourFace wrote: wow, is this a one piece body?

oh yeah, i see the line now. but it's in a good place, i hate when the seam goes up the middle. I've never owned a Jaguar before, I would like to one day. I hope it turns out great for you :-)

Yeah - it's two piece. Bought the paint from Steve 'Manchester Guitar Tech' Robinson - just waiting for a dry day to spray. Not getting too many of those in Manchester at the moment.

Have you ever seen his refinishes? I was wondering what they're like.

when I went to collect the paint, he didn't exactly give me a guided tour, but then I was a complete stranger, so I don't blame him. He seemed a genuine, nice guy. He also seemed competent.
But no, I didn't see any finished guitars.

How did you preserve the pencil date? What did you use to remove the finish over the date and not strip the date? Does the citristrip not react to pencil? Nice jag.

Lovely looking guitar dude(though I hate jags playing wise), just been reading up..the original owner sent me some detailed pics of that guitar before he put it on ebay..what a madman though..sanding and spraying it..how to destroy the value of a vintage guitar in 30 mins flat! PS if it was me I'd have got it factory refinished..bit expensive but it holds up the value of the guitar better

I used Nitromors - like Tsoff I think. Pencil date was under the paint...linc wrote: How did you preserve the pencil date? What did you use to remove the finish over the date and not strip the date? Does the citristrip not react to pencil? Nice jag.
First coat of clear went on today - sand tomorrow and prime hopefully...

Killer color - how does it match the original headstock color - I assume you left that alone? I would think the headstock may have faded or greened a bit over the years. You may be able to tweak the body color by using a slightly tinted clear coat. Keep those pics coming.

Re: 1963 Jag Sonic Blue
Headstock is a greener tone. I am going to do the polish and then stick it in the freezer for a while before I reassemble - I want the area under the pickguard etc to stay the colour it is now. I'll hang it in the window for a while to see if the South China sun can do a UV job on it - if not, I might try a UV bulb. Any suggestions on this would be great - I've read about people taking guitars to the tanning salon, but they never say if it works or not.
I'm not going to relic it much, although there are some bumps and scratches here and there that I might work back in when the finish hardens.

Over on the Reranch forum (http://www.reranch.com/reranch/index.php) folks have good results spraying slightly tinted lacquer to green/age sonic blue. You can do it with the pickguard and trem attached but taped off with masking tape so it stays nice and blue underneath.
