Re: 1960 Jazzmaster Inca Silver
Finally got an original mint-green celluloid guard. 1960-61... but painted white! Once I saw it on eBay (via Andrew), I knew I had to have it, because they're not easy to find on a budget.
So, today's the day I get to work so I can replace the Fender repro I was using. Starting with 300 grit wet sanding.
Dremel on the wide bevel to get the paint off the sides, very carefully....
5 hours later, wet sanding, dremel work, and picking at it with an x-acto knife... this the freshly cleaned celluloid mint-green on the left, compared with my Fender AVRI pickguard (aged with a bit love) on the right. The original's wide bevel is great, but man did this guard shrink over the years. It was a fight to get it to fit back on a guitar.
And finally on my 1960 JM...

Thanks guys! Cleaning that pickguard off was way more work than I thought it would be... Totally worth the pain!

Looks great.
I need one for my inca jm as well, and thought about grabbing it, but was dissuaded by the amount of work involved.
glad to see it worked out.

How have I missed this thread until today!?
Beautiful job - I love the matching headstock as well on the Musikraft neck.

Looks great. I would not be able to live with that crack in the guard above the pickup. It would drive me bananas. vintage or not. That's just me though.

The crack bothered me, too, but beggars can't be choosers. I've started to appreciate it's "charm," maybe because I don't really have a choice... I'm not gonna put the AVRI guard back on after all the work I did to get this one.

I keep stumbling upon this page and this guitar is one example of why Inca Silver is one of my new favorite JM/Jag colors. What a beaut..

My favorite tort has a two cracks in it, one right near where yours is and another one by the input jack. These old guards get brittle as time goes on.cursesfoiled wrote:The crack bothered me, too, but beggars can't be choosers.
