1960 Jazzmaster Inca Silver

Post by cursesfoiled » Mon May 24, 2010 7:46 am

My thanks to this forum for being a wonderful source of collective information and guidance, as well as to Jim Shine, for his instructive "Intricacies" webpage. Special thanks to everyone who helped me directly. All pictures circa 2010-2013.

In 2009-2010, I repaired and restored a 1960 Jazzmaster by bringing together all the parts one by one. Pics below and throughout the thread.

Original Parts:
1960 Body ("4/60")
1959-1960 Neck (no pencil on heel, but legit)
1960 Single-Line Klusons
1958-61 Patent Pending Tremolo and Bar+Tip
1960 Pickups and Covers
1959-1960 Wiring (pots, caps, rollers, switches+tip, wires, etc.)
1960 Brass Shielding
1960-61 13-hole Mint Green Pickguard
1960 Serial Neck Plate
1960 Bridge and posts

Non-Original Parts:
2010 Conversion Bushings (for original neck)
2010 Fender Split-Shaft Vol & Tone Knobs (carved inside to fit on a solid shaft 1meg pot)
2010 Strap Buttons & Screws
2010 '62 AVRI JM Aluminum Pickguard Shield
2010 '62 AVRI Tremolo Bar
Black cloth Wire 22awg for Grounding
2010 Pickguard Screws
Extra 2010 Mastery Bridge
Extra Replacement 2010 Musikraft Neck & Klusons (to paint with a matching headstock and preserve the original neck and its logo)
Extra Replacement 2010 '62 AVRI JM Mint Green Pickguard (this was a temp until I found the right one)
Extra '62 AVRI Bridge+Saddles

The body was pity case, but light as a feather, so it had the potential. It just needed everything else.

The primary issues were that the original Sunburst body had been repainted Fiesta Red (maybe Dakota) and then Olympic White, and then partially refinished again. When I got it, it was at the primer stage and left very rough. Also, several of the tail piece screws were lost in their holes (with broken off heads and with no easy way to remove them.) Under some layers of paint, the original pencil mark was discovered, dating the body to April, 1960. The broken screws were pulled, the body was re-sanded, and dowels were set.

The wiring was reassembled using a vintage wiring harness, a rhythm section set, a 3-way switch (amber tip), and vol/tone pots (pictured below) all resourced from 1959-1960 Jazzmasters.

The 1960 JM pickups are the scatter wound enamel style. 8.3k neck, 8.5k bridge. The leads needed soldering repairs, but otherwise, the pickups were in working order and didn't need any other help.

The Inca Silver body and replacement neck were repainted by MJT in their early days. The pickguard and knobs used temporary AVRI replacements as placeholders slightly yellowed with tea and coffee. The tremolo unit is Pat. Pending with the heavy spring. Found original tall bridge posts. I do have an original bridge, although I was using an AVRI bridge as seen in the photo, while I worked on replacing the original post height screws.

The painted neck is a Musikraft rosewood/rock maple, with a very thin C shape. Musikraft did an excellent job. There are clay dots, a slab board, etc, but it's a compound radius and doesn't have 50/50 side dots. I did my own heavily rolled edges and dressed the fret ends perfect match to any 50 year-old Fender.

After the first build, I was still looking for any 1960 knobs and an original pick guard. Later on, I found the hens teeth rare early mint green pick guard (page 4), decided to use a Mastery Bridge.
