I mixed my own Nitro SP totally from scratch today!
I've had this idea that it wouldn't be too hard to mix Fenders opaque colours totaly from scratch and today I had a go at it.
As I'm helping a fellow forumite with getting his guitar Shell Pink - that is what I was aiming at today.
Ingredients:
- Nitro base laquer - a syrup thick clear nitro that you mix colours or clear from. I get it from a wood work supplier.
- Nitro thinner - can be bought at some paint stores (at least around here). I get it cheaper from same place as nitro base above.
- Titanium white pigment powder. Can be bought at hobby and paint stores. They have also black, red, green earth colours etc.
- Red and amber nitro (anillin) tint - can be bought from stewmac. I get mine from http://www.gnu.se" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Same as used to tint clear for sunbursts.
I started with solving the white pigment in thinner - then mixing it 6 to 4 with nitro base laquer. Now I had something very similar to OLY - maybe just a drop of amber and it will work as OLY.
Next was to mix the white laquer with red amd amber tints to get the right Shell Pink hue. I did this by having picture references, plus adding the tints little by little and making samples along the way.
The Ingredients:
The colour samples:
When I was satisfied I sprayed the JM in question.
Warm light:
Cold light:
With a white (not mint) Jag guard as reference:
I will spray second layer tomorrow or on tuesday, but I think it looks really promising!
In the future I'll try some other opaque custom colours - I need to get some green and blue tint to make sonic, daphne, surf and seafoam, plus I'll get some red and black pigment powder as well for making some non pastel ones too.

Re: I mixed my own Nitro SP totally from scratch today!
Thanks guys!
The thing is: ordering readymade DuPont nitro laquer costs ~900SEK/€90/$125 for a litre around here and this way I get it for 10% of the cost (plus work effort of course). It's a kick to know you made the paint yourself too, instead of buying a rattlecan. It's a way to go with all colours and I still have to trust in readymade Metallics as it is now, but I think it's a huge step in the right direction.
I'll update when I have results from mixing other colours too.
Also - I've started compiling a list of readymade Duplicolours that is comparable to the original Fender 60's metallics. This will take some time and money though, but I think it will be VERY usuable for the European part of the OSG community. My thought is that I'll put it up in the Library section in time. It will be based on actual colour samples and pics, so it will be a product of my "good eye" and what I think is the best match, wich probably will have minor deviations - but anyway - better than nothing.

Cool bit of D.I.Ying.
It'd be ideal if you could get hold of colour-cards (rather like pantone books) of all the Fender & Gibson custom colours.
Using photos & computer-monitor images must be frustratingly inconsistent at times.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

It is....I'll be ordering colour samples on some of the colours, just because of that. The opaque colours are much easier to get accurate than metallics, I guess.PorkyPrimeCut wrote: It'd be ideal if you could get hold of colour-cards (rather like pantone books) of all the Fender & Gibson custom colours.

Thanks again every one - and Shep: I'll gladly borrow that colour sample some time!

This is very cool, I wouldn't sweat it on totally vintage accurate, most old guitars have changed colour over the years and getting a colour YOU like is cooler than by rote following of Fender.
