Interesting Electric XII info

Post by CurtisNovak » Mon Mar 05, 2007 10:40 am

I have been doing more research, and pattern making on the XII.  I will write it all up soon but here is some interesting tidbits so far.

1) the pickups were not RWRP.
2) The body is Identical to my 63 JM
3) The neck is quite a bit larger. here are some photos of my 63 JM neck in the XII pocket

Here are some of the router templates I have made so far.

nice work!  I noticed that about the neck too, it also feels a bit deeper in my palm than my JM (from the same year)

While my JM is not vintage, I too have noticed that my Maverick and JM are extremely close in body shape.

both of these are 66's and the bodies seem to be the same shape though the upper horn looks a little different on the XII.. it's currently out of the house for a set up so I can't overlay them to tell for sure but that's how it seemed to me and looks that way judging by the pic..

I stacked the 2 bodies stripped of hardware and they were identical.  I think the difference you are seeing is that the pickguard cut.

Hey Curtis, since you're going this far with making templates, any chance you'd be making a Custom/Maverick also?

Here's mine. It's currently dismantled in anticipation of a paint job.

I think that there's a parcel delivery service that runs between Louisiana and Arizona.    ;)

I can see past that.. the horn on the JM does seem more rounded over, maybe it's just mine though  ???

I assume this is the case since yours matched up

I should add I did a more extensive look and the only thing I can see is the neck pocket is wider to hold the wider neck

Hi. Is there anyway you could make a life size pic of the pickguard template so I could print it out and cut a guard for my XII project?

I aligned my 63 JM pattern to the XII  and it was all exact except as you said the horn.  As you can see here it is not longer but actually just cut deeper.  Note b/c of the radius of the body edge you are seeing under the body edge... the pencil line shows the cut edge.

I always thought the butt of the XII was more rounded than the one on the JM (near the jack). The pic daydreamdelay posted of the two side by side show that pretty clearly, IMO.

Could you try and align that part too?  I'm curious to know if I'm seing things or if I'm right!
