First Project (Mustang) Done!

Post by guitars and girls » Fri Jul 17, 2009 9:48 am

Hi Guys,

If your a member at reranch, I just posted this there.

I FINALLY finished up my first project, a Fender Mustang. I've always wanted a mustang and decided
that my first project would be one.  This project has taken a lot longer than I'd of liked and has been
through a fire with smoke damage and some other crazy things. But I am glad it's done and I'm pretty
happy with the results.

It started as Olympic white but I wasn't too thrilled with the blueish gray tint it had ( I know it says
olympic white has a blueish gray tint, but I wanted to get the creamy aged look). So I tried to apply
tinted clear coat to it and for whatever reason, it turned a mint green hue. So I decided to go with
Fender Blonde Opaque. And I am really glad I did.

The only new pieces are the pickups, electronics and wire, minus the switches, which came with the
pickguard. And I'm actually having an issue with the switches where I have to wiggle them a little in
certain positions for them to work. I've ordered some new ones and I'm going to be replacing them.
But other than that it sounds really nice. It has a set of Antiquity II's in it.

I learned A LOT on this project and can't wait to finish the next one.

Here are some pics of the progress.

I also started a blog a while back to keep track of my projects, parts, and cost.
Check it out if you'd like. I have a jaguar project going on right now.

Good job - you really did a nice job polishing it out for your first project.

...looking at your blog, I noticed that the mint green color that your mustang turned when you tinted it looks very similar to a rare custom finish 50s tele pictured in A.R. Duchossoir's Fender Telecaster book.  Neat stuff.

Very nice job !

Tell me, what do you think of the Antiquity pickups ? I might have a Mustang project on my hands soon. :)

Thanks guys.

Haddock, the Anitquity II's  are great. I highly recommend them.

Thanks, I polished the color coat on this. I didn't use clear. I wanted to try to get a more vintage feel
but it still polished up just as shiny as if I had clear on it. I used Finesse It II, Perfect It, and Imperial Hand Glaze.

Looks great! My '64 Mustang used to look like that...before I refinished it purple back in 1968. Now its black. Seeing your class restoration reminds me I need to put mine back to Oly white.

That 3M Finesse is a fine product, I have used it with several lacquer refins.

Thanks guys. yeah I fell in love with the aged Olympic white color but when I first sprayed the olympic white, it was too blueish grey. I could have waited 20 years or so for a clear to turn it yellowish but I decided to take the quicker route and spray it blonde. Glad I did.
Thanks again  :D
