61 jazzmaster project new pics!
Bonjour!
This is my fisrt project and i'm quite happy to begin with a 61 jazzmaster (neck, body, pickups)
I just received the differents elements this morning.
the bridge is not orginal, the pickguard comes from a 62 and has been cutted , the pots are from 63/64 and maybe comes from a telecaster or a precision bass
I bought relic tuners, 61 knobs and straps from ebay
I also bought input jack, bridge and toggle switch from the right era. I hope so...
I will refinish it in vintage white

Re: 61 jazzmaster project!
Then i rebuid it to hear if everything goes right.
The pots seemed to be out of order. I tried with 75 strat splift shaft pots. They quite "tired" but now it works and sounds pretty great with fast settings.
The neck is straight even with 11-52 strings and the pickups sound really great!
So now i have to find pots from 61
Then i started to sand the black painting on the backside...

Looks really interesting!
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Re: 61 jazzmaster project!
So i continued and finshed the sanding with 400
back
to reveal the flaws areas i used a wet sponge and wiped all the body. The flaws appeared and can be sanded more easily... in my experience
ready to be primed
first passes
and primed
here is the painting i will use for the vintage white color, light ivory from dupli-color.

Re: 61 jazzmaster project!
As it is my first painting project i'm not up to date with the right complete method!
So i did not apply a grain filler. sanding sealer!!!
what can i do know?
like Curtis Novak, apply coats of minwax polycrilc on the primer coat (not sure to find this product in France) until i fill the grain ( as it is solid color ), sand it smoothly, spray my color and then spray the clear coat (nitro coat)
or i sand smoothly the primer, paint the body, wet sand it and then spray the clear coats?
thank you for helping me

Re: 61 jazzmaster project!
hey great project!
but: the imperfections and stuff need to be done after you have achieved a real good finish. an improper prep job with only halfway decent finish will not look vintage, it will look like a badly executed new finish.
it's not a bad idea to do proper sanding between the different (prep vs. lacquer) coats, and between each so and so many lacquer coats. will take longer, you'll need a bit more lacquer, but the result will be better.
for a bit of step by step diy advice, you can check the reranch site or poke around in the restorations section here ...
