Restoring a 64/65 Mustang
So thx to a heads up here on offset I ended up picking up an "L" series Mustang (Late 64, Early 65)
The bad...
The guitar is missing one of the original tuning keys, the screw things that raise/lower the bridge, the Vibrato bar, has an extra string tree hole on the headstock, the body was refinished, the back of the neck has a really dark tint on it as well. The face is intact tho' (Save for that tiny string tree hole)
The facts
Built near the end of 64 and the beginning of 65. Neck has a date of Feb 65 . Slab body and really comfy "A" width neck.
The good...
Original pickups, pots, electronics, shielding plates, original case. No routes under the guard. The body is really smooth with hardly any dings so it won't need much prep work.
What I'm thinking of doing...
Refinning back to one of the Mustang Stock colors, since the guard is white this had to be an Oly. white so I'm inclined to do that. (Actually I couldn't see any signs of any color under the guard or neck) Unless I can find a vintage white pearloid guard then I think I can do Daphne but I can easily be persuaded so anything can happen. I'll just put up a poll and see what happens.
See, this is where I'm gong to have to agree with Brad... If I refin it, I'm going to have to do a slight relic so the body matches all the old hardware otherwise it's just going to look kinda funny. New body with rusty parts.. :-\
I will be refinning this on Nitro.
Sanding the back of the neck and applying a tint that matches the original on the headstock face.
Finding that ever expensive single white kluson that's missing in action.
Finding the screw things for the bridge.
So If anybody has anything that can help me please PM me.
Now some Vintage Pr0n...

i just voted for dakota red ;D cuz i think a refin and relic job will be easier than it would if you did it white
and you can pull off tort on red better than tort on daphne, and your duo is blue already, right?
or get it done in black like a zhivagoist would! ;)

I voted Dakota cause I'm really into that color right now
It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

No man, Im in KW. It was a 4 hour round trip, including a pit stop at the bank and waiting 30 min to use the ATM..but it was worth it.hansonparry wrote: Dude! You're in Whitby too?

But can't, I hate natural guitars. I think should be put back to stock.
The only thing now tho' is that I got too much crap going and it's starting to add up. I gotta slow down a bit,.. :(

i'd have to say slow down on the strat, and focus on the 'stang and your DIY amp!tribi9 wrote:

Wel, Im going to get the amp done first, the Mustang second and yeah the Strat's gonna have to wait. I might even sell the loaded Strat pickguard to help with the other two projects...Stratelejazzuar wrote:i'd have to say slow down on the strat, and focus on the 'stang and your DIY amp!tribi9 wrote:

Re: Restoring a 64/65 Mustang Help picking a color...
nice score!
man but i hate A-necks!
my '67 mustang has been refinned, and i think they refinished it back to "original white" basing the color on that of the pickup covers. looks kinda yellow-greenish, but cool.
i don't like naturals either!
