My New 1965 - How many coats of paint for vintage correct refinish (LPB)?

Howdie

still in a state of shock that I own a '65 Tele (picking up tommorrow!)  :? :? :?

Here's a pic

Image

it was originally Lake Placid Blue but as you can see it got the "seventies" treatment - and was also routed for a neck humbucker (it's an early patent sticker Gibson so tasty!).... that is a real nitrate guard that was hacked up too  :'(

The good news is the neck is totally original finish and the double line klusons work great. The guitar plays and sounds great - pearl dot neck is slim!

ANYWAY.... I am restoring as follows (by Jonathan Kinkade in Bristol) : -

1. Route repair at neck pickup with alder plug then re-route for correct pickup.
2. I Have sourced a genuine celluloid nitrate replica guard (it's the real stuff smells like menthol when cut the guy sent a sample - only available in parchment though) £90.
3. Fit Seymour Duncan Antiquity II neck aged Tele pickup
4.Vintage wire refret
5. Get replica mid 60's black/orange no logo case
5. Refin body back to original Lake Placid Blue - nitro of course

My questions are: -

1. By Feb 65 would the body have been dipped in yellow stain even for custom colours? If yes what should I use to replicate this?
2. how many sealer coats and color coats would have been used back in the day?

I'm guessing the following....

2 x white sealer
2 or 3 x LP blue color coat
2 coats of clear nitro on top

Anyone know if this is about correct? Help much appreciated!

Finally I will getting the reraunch paints to do it BUT was wondering if the original Dupont acrylic would be available still as I understand ths is what was used.

Anyway-  thrilled to own this I will keep you all posted on the progress!

Nice guitar.  I'd play it for a while as-is - I bet it sounds pretty swell with the pat sticker HB.  By the way, there are a bunch of threads in the re-ranch forum where guys have plugged extra routes - this one is a particularly amazing SG rescue:

I think the number of coats of sealer depend more on how many it takes to get a smooth base (how dinged the body is) more thn what was original.  An primer should be just enough to cover the wood color evenly.

Keep us posted.

There is something wrong with that Jazzmaster.

Thanks everyone  8)

Yes I've been busy - we move to Yorkshire in 2 weeks and xmas/new year/moving has eaten up so much time!

But yes I have been scheming about this '65 Tele.... I was offered it originally some 6 months ago but for too much money. I basically wrote the idea off and  forgot about it as by then I'd bought the LPB XII. Then, a couple of weeks ago I made a low ball offer on the Tele and they met me half way.... deal done! It's an 'L-series' serial number by the way Feb 1965 neck stamp.

I will be indeed playing it as is for a while anyway as I won't be taking it in for repairs due to cash situation. I love the "Andy Summers" sound (most of the lead playing is a bridge and PAF combined) from the first two Police albums so I might keep the pickup in there! We will see!

JetSet - Wow those holes on the SG's a crazy! The ones on my new Tele are not exactly professional - but a totally repairable.... (see pic)

Looking at the paint in the cavities I'm 99% certain in was Lake Placid Blue originally (see the remains of white primer which would be correct for a custom colour). Looks like it  might have been sprayed black at some point (looking at the neck cavity the 'paint stick' shadow is gone).

I don't think the body has been oversanded - the edges look nice and sharp  :D

Nice score Marc, will appreciate in value nicely!

I very much doubt you can get the original Dupont paint. What you can get is the Chromabase tints. I used this on my SFG VI. It lays down very well. I had Nitro clear (and a yellow tint) shot over the top and no issues yet. Plus you should be able to get an exact colour match if you give them the correct Dupont LPB number. If you do go for Chromabase, try to get it Ready for Use -  the reducer may be expensive to buy seperately. You won't need any binder or any of that.

This guy talks a lot about Fenders paint jobs so this might help, you might already have this site.

nice Tele, I'm looking forward to seeing it in LPB again.

I would reconsider this step though:
"3. Fit Seymour Duncan Antiquity II neck aged Tele pickup"

personally I'd order one from Jason Lollar or Curtis Novak, they're not only better (imo) but also cheaper. And I bet if you ask them they'll even be willing to make it look aged.
