63 restoration

Post by Old Crow » Thu Jul 31, 2008 2:46 pm

Almost finished stripping a thick white finish off a 63 J.M. and discovered it's MAHOGANY  8)
Looks like it was originally painted Dakota red directly over the yellow stain, but the guy I got it from said it was orig. Olympic white. So I guess the red didn't look right and they went with Oly wh.
I'm wondering what I should do...leave it as is for awhile, paint it Dakota red, or Oly ??
What do you guys think.

During 63 and 64 Fender did make some mahogany bodies. I had a 63 mah. Strat. and now I have a 63 mah. J.M.

I'd say "as is" just because it's so rare.

I've got a lawsuit 70's tele that I stripped only to find that it had a mahogany body - it's a 72 custom, so it sounds pretty great - nice with the humbucker and spiky with the tele bridge.

Jim's Guitars, a local dealer, had a mahog JM a while back, it was stolen during a break in.

If you are "almost finished stripping the finish" I'd re-spray it in red.

Fender certainly did make a number of models in mahogany during the early 60s. Mustangs, for instance, were ALL either mahogany or poplar. Other models, including Strats and Jazzmasters, occasionally used pine, poplar, or mahogany as a body wood, and on a few known examples, hickory instead of maple for necks.
