Vintage mustang project... Sort of....

Hey guys, i've just started construction of my mustang project which i'm gonna call semi-vintage..

Parts are as follows...
Already got:
65' Mustang body (Feck all of the original finish left so refinishing in natural...)
72' Bronco neck (Near mint, only a few slight nicks)
Reissue tort pickguard
Reissue control plate
Reissue trem+Mustang bridge
Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Mustang pickups
Reissue bridge cover
Cloth covered wire
Reissue "F" neckplate+screws.

Need:
Pots (No idea which ones i need, any suggestions? Capacitors?)
Switches
Machineheads. (Gonna get originals, been checking out a few)

I know it's not exactly vintage spec. but it's the mustang i wanna build... I'll get the rest of the parts when i get paid!
Bein a lab tech doesn't pay as well as you might think!!!
I'll post pics as soon as i get my hands on a camera!

Any suggestions/comments/tips are very welcome!!!!

Any suggestions on finish or colour?

That guard looks pretty good for a repro.

I guess the obvious suggestion would be Olympic White, maybe yellowed a little. That'd look cool.

Or change the guard to a black, white or pearloid & go for a two-tone tobacco burst. You could go for 3-tone sunburst but I really like the bursts that have the red faded out.

I'm not a big fan of plain red or blue (dakota & daphne I think).

You'll need pickup covers too.

Yeah, I i know that but forgot to put them on the list! The guard is an allparts, believe it or not... I dunno if there's already a thread on this but would someone be able to do a basic step-by-step on nitro refinishing?

As for pots, got with 250K CTS or ALPHA. Best get switchcraft 3 way slide switches, so you can do thr out of phase swiching as well. It's been a while since i saw Mustang guts, so I can't remmber which cap, but I guess a 0.47pFu?

Not sure if you're interested in non-authentic colors, but I look at that bright red guard and think navy blue. As deep a blue as you can find, I figure. I think it would be classy, a little showy, and original... A vintage white would work too, if you want more authenticity.

Thanks a lot! I actually picked up two switchcraft three point switches in dublin the other day.... The guy found two of them in a box and didn't know where they came from or why the shop had them... Needless to say, he didn't know how much they cost either so i got them for €2 each!

I'd go with Ice Blue Metallic, ease the contrast a bit (not all of us are colorblind )

Some Mustangs have really crappy wood grain, that one is really usable for see-through finishes (including see-through purple, green and so on). I can't really suggest anything because almost any color can be used on that guitar, although if you use that pickguard it's more limited (for example I would probably not do a red finish with that pickguard). Sunburst would not be a good idea on a first project, I don't really like sunburst on Mustangs either, I think the body is too small, better on Jags/JMs.

Can anyone tell me what these "screwdriver marks" are all about.. The body has one under the pickguard...

Hey, just strung up the 'stang... Wee problem...

I had to jack up the bridge loads just so the strings would clear the frets.... And there's no shim in it at the moment...

Anyone else encountered this???
