'62 restoration gradually continues

Post by mezcalhead » Fri Jul 04, 2008 7:04 am

Those of you who have been around for a while may remember this particularly borked example of a pre-CBS JM:

Image

It went away for a refinish and came back a year later without one .. came back again from a second attempt and is now olympic white. I have been gradually sorting out the electrics after finding a pair of vintage pups for it, so the wiring is now a mix of old and new cloth wire (there was quite a lot of nasty plastic-coated wire in with the humbuckers).

I'm halfway through filing the guard which is heavily shrunken, but it's such a nice light-coloured piece of tort I think it's worth the effort.

Next up: refill a few stripped screwholes for the guard and tuners and then it's off for a refret.

Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

So nice to see the fresh white, and it's going to look fabulous with that tort - you're right to persevere with the fitting.

I'll add another couple of  :-* :-* s to the pile, too!

One got sold already, the other I'm keeping hold of - I have a vague plan for the future that I'll put it in the neck position of an otherwise traditional maple neck Tele project, as if someone tried to do an Andy Summers on their vintage Esquire.

That's pure hotness.  Is your re-fretter planing the board as well?

did you trim any of the shielding due to the guard shrinking a little and it showing?  just curious b/c I can see any shielding sticking out under the guard.

your guitar looks beautiful. :-* :?  beautiful pick guard! :-*

you're lucky the pickups'ring screws were fake, and there's no unwanted holes in the guard

Those humbuckers looked really close to the strings, they could have pulled the strings and muffled the sound. They looked really dumb with those covers and one cover upside down. Just one  would look cool in a Tele though.

Much better now with JM pickups.
