Craigslist Find: Original 1960 Jazzmaster UPDATED PICS

Post by jbuckner » Sun Jun 01, 2008 4:23 pm

I had to post my newest craigslist find. It's a abused original 1962 Jazzmaster with the original case.

The only things that are original are the neck, body and the bridge, everything thing else has been changed.

The body has been routed for EMG humbuckers and Fender locking tuners have been installed. The guy had a pickguard made out of diamond plate that was then zinc plated. Crazy!

I'm going to rebuild her back with vintage parts and make her sing again.

Here's some pics as I haven't opened her up yet to see the routing damage.

Here's the best part about the whole deal..........I paid $450 for everything.

I'll keep you guys posted with the rebuilding project.

Sounds like a pretty decent deal, considering the neck and body seem to be mostly intact.

Who does the signature on the headstock belong to?  ???

The things people did to poor innocent offsets...  :'(

Good score for the price, though. I look forward to seeing this one restored to respectability.

I've never understood the idea of modding a vintage Jazzmaster or Jag for METALZ, especially if they look like that...

Guy shows up for metal gig with EMG'd Jazzmaster: Bandmate- "Dude, what the fuck is that thing?  Did you steal it from your grandpa?  It's not even black...Pussy.  You're out of the band!"

Offyourface's metal JM is awesome, though... :D

The signature on the headstock was Ian Moore's. He's a blues player from Austin, TX. Luckily the signature came off with no problem. Nothing a little alcohol and Q-Tips wouldn't fix. I even saved the decal!!

Turns out the neck on this thing is dated 5-60, not a 1962. It needs a refret badly aas the original frets are still there.

The body date is any guess as theirs so many layers of paint over the whole body much less the neck pocket. I know it's a least a 1960 body as the control route is curved, not straight like a 1959's is. The body weighs 4 LBS even with all the paint.

Back to the paint I think the original finish is under a layer of the grey/silver that covers most of the guitar, as on parts of the body I can chip off the grey/silver and there's a checked black finish underneath.  The guy that I bought it from said that it was a sunburst finish before he painted it. I doubt he took the time to sand it down before he painted it grey/silver.

After wet sanding the middle under the pickguard I'm getting five layers of paint before the wood. It goes grey/silver ---> White---> Black ---> Red ---> Blue ---> wood. Anybody know if Fender used any of these paint colors as a primer for a sunburst? I know that Fender used to shoot custom colors over sunburst finishes; but not under a sunburst finish.

I'm going to have to have patches made for the humbucker routes, I'll have to level the hack job routes before I put the patches in then hide glue them in.

Does anybody know if or how I can patch the tuner holes so that I can use a set of Kluson's, instead of the Fender locking tuners that the neck was re-drilled for? The weight of these Locking tuners is ridiculous.

Here's picks of the body  and the neck and some of the colors that I have found during my wet sanding. Enjoy.

Have a look at what d-rock did with the headstock in this thread:

Looks like a pretty good job to me.

You may also wish to consider a set of these:

Which would be easier than trying to fill and re-drill the holes and would be invisible when installed.

Great score.  +1 on the StewMac conversion bushings, though those holes look really big.  You may need to plug and re-drill.

I must say I love my Macs.

I'm hoping the stew-mac bushing converters work, I'd hate to have to re-dowel this neck.

Looks like modern 10 mm holes to me - so the conv.bushings would work.

:)

I'm in the middle of a 62 JM  restoration project myself - on wednesday I'll go pick up the paint - yes!
