that's the kind of abused JM I've always wanted to meet..something so horrible to cut prices down but still restorable to its former glory...
Architecture students are like virgins with an itch they cannot scratch, never build a building 'till are fifty, what kind of life is that?

That's just not right...and I actually LIKE EMG's!
That's an awesome score...and if those are the 81/85 Zakk Wylde EMG set, you should be able to sell those for a good $150 on ebay to finance some Novaks...

I've got the EMG's on craigslist and so far only one bite. I'll try eBay if they don't sell.missionguitars wrote: That's just not right...and I actually LIKE EMG's!

I'm thinking that I actually might get a set of Lindy Frailins instead of Novaks.
I had Lindy wind a neck humbucker to sound like a Jazzmaster neck pickup for my G&L Blues Boy Tele; and it sounds great.
I'll post pics tomorrow but I've sanded most of the finish off the body, the neck is being refretted as we speak.
I'm also sourcing all the parts for the rest of the guitar. Hopefully I'll have her up and running in about a month.
I'm also thinking about building a website via iWeb on my Mac to catalog my rebuild and to share my experience with everybody.

Re: Craigslist Find: Original 1960 Jazzmaster UPDATED PICS
Hi All. Here's some updated pics of the body since I started sanding her.
I originally thought that the original finish was underneath the primer grey finish; unfortunately I was wrong. You can see in some of the pics the yellow tint that Fender for a sunburst finish did in the 50's-60's. This goes along with the neck date of 5-60. This was the process before the Fullerplast era that Fender started in 1963. In 1963 the Fullerplast was applied to the bodies to make a smooth layer of glass-like plastic so that the finish would be even and smooth, the nitro finish was then applied on top of this plastic coffin that trapped all the moisture from the body.
The original finish was still there in spots, but there wasn't enough to save it. As you can see in the pics there was a bunch of layers of paint underneath the grey primer layer.
I going to work on sanding the belly cut and the sides today. It's just taking forever with the mineral sprits wet-sanding that I'm doing.
There's also a pic of the back of the headstock and the drilling damage from the locking tuners that were installed. I ordered the 3/8 spacers for the tuners so I can put a set of Kluson's back on her, hopefully they will work and I won't have to plug and re-drill the tuner holes. I'll know more when I get the neck back from the refret.
I'll keep you guys up to date as I make progress.
Enjoy.

It's probably kinda late in the game for you, but I use citristrip and a plastic spatula to remove crappy refin. paint from wood bodies.jbuckner wrote: It's just taking forever with the mineral sprits wet-sanding that I'm doing.

Looking great! Personally, I'd dowel the tuner holes, just in case you get a crack or something. Might as well do it right the first time.
Once again I gotta say, great score.

Here's a part update for everybody.
So far I have a vintage tort pickguard from forum member jetset coming. Thanks jetset!
I bought some NOS brass pickup and control shielding pans from Angela instruments.
I also have a set of reissue single line Klusons coming; with the 3/8 bushing converters that are going to work.
Now all that I need is to have the body finished and then I'm waiting on the refret to get done and I'll be ready to assemble.
I'm thinking Olympic White or See through white blonde (Mary Kay) for the color? What do you guys think?
Now I'll need is a set of pickups!
I'm getting excited, I'm hoping that I'll have her together in a month.

i talked with that guy for a few days trying to buy it.
he wouldn't ship for under $100.
he wouldn't take paypal, cuz that's how buyers get scammed.
i pleaded, and offered more than the asking price....but he wouldn't do it.
i'm glad someone from the forum got it.

See trough blonde would give it a nice end-fifties-vibe, but since it's a 1960...
Here's the question: Do you want to restore it all vintage-correct or not?
