New member, new restoration......olympic white now!!!!
I know its not too pretty now, but here it is:
this is the photo from the Ebay auction I just won a week or two ago.
I just got it in the mail. it isn't perfect, but I think I can fix it. I don't want to screw anything up, so I'll probably ask you guys a bunch of questios along the way. I havn't taken my own shots yet, but I will soon. I am psyched for a new project. This will be my first Jazzmaster. I have wanted one for a long time!
I already stripped most of the black paint. It was really crappy looking. The neck pocket has an "ok" stamp in a circle. and the tremolo pocket says "12 / 61" or " 12 / 64". I think it might be 64 because of the tremolo grounding wire, what do you guys think?
There is a big crack in the body, but no wood is missing. It is a clean crack where two alder pieces were glued. You can see it in the picture. I'm thinking Titebond (original formula).
I don't know what color I want yet.
I'll post more pictures over the next few days.

Wow - that looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. Titebond is the right stuff to use - don't be afraid of opening the crack up as far as you can to get the glue right in.
Best of luck with it!

Re: New member, new restoration.......
Good luck with your project, Waynebell.
As a newbie here (but not to playing guitars) also, I have a project Jazzmaster that has been sitting in the closet for 10 years. It's a '63 missing the original neck (replaced with an aftermarket strat neck), but everything else seems authentic. I checked the "L" serial number on Jim Shine's site and the neckplate is authentic, and appears to be late 1963. The previous owner had stripped the original finish and gooped on a clear coat of some sort. I sanded it off--a slow tedious process- and now it is bare wood. It has the OK stamp in the neck cavity like yours. The spray in the control cavities indicate a 3 tone sunburst, so that's what I hope to eventually restore it to. I want to make a good player out of it, so will keep an eye open for a AVRI neck to return it to some degree of "correctness".
I'll be watching the progress on this project closely!

Re: New member, new restoration.......new pics.
Here is the neck pocket, showing the "ok" stamp.
Here is the vibrato pocket, to me it reads 12/64 even though the "4" is hard to read:
Here is the main crack, I hope to get a syringe to fill it with glue.

Re: New member, new restoration.......
I got these cool syringes from my "Wicked Uncle Ernie" He does fiber optic splices, and some have these little syringes used for two part epoxy. They will be great for Titebond wood glue.
Have you ever heard that "Who" song abot Uncle Ernie?? "Fiddle about, fiddle about...." But that's a whole nother story!
I'll try to take pics of my crack repair.

Good to see that body ended up in a good home. I watched that auction. Best of luck with the restoration.

Re: New member, new restoration.......
The original Titebond is good stuff...only thing better would be hide glue and I don't think it (hide glue) would work as good for a crack.
The 'crack' on your guitar actually looks like it's coming apart where it was originally joined at the factory (too clean and straight). Is it a 3 piece body?
The grain of the wood is also interesting...almost looks like Ash instead of Alder...??

Re: New member, new restoration.......new pics
Here are th aforementioned syringes:
I have sanded the top with a random orbital sander. The black refin really bled into the wood atound the tremolo, and control cavity.
The syringe is great for gluing in dowells.

Here are a couple shots of the crack area:
And more bleedin black.
Now, I'm busy filling all the screw holes on the face of the guitar.

Re: New member, new restoration.......new vintage pickguard.....won't fit covers
I just got a vintage pickguard, and I am trying to make things fit. This is harder than I thought .
The new covers I bought are too big to fit in the pickguard.
What do you guys do about this?
I was thinking about scraping the pickguard so that the covers fit, with a razor.
