'62 JM oly. white/tort Clear is on. new pics!
This guitar was born in Jan. of "62. It started life Dakota Red with white/mint guard, then someone refinished it in LPB and drilled a hole in the pickguard by the upper slider switch. This was before I bought it in 2006 like the pic shows.
neck plate with Dakota Red paint chip stuck to it. This is the only evidence of the factory color.

Here is a pic from the Hoboken website.

I sold the guard because it had the patched hole, bought a '58 anodized guard, painted the body in Reranch Blonde.

Then I decided against the '58 guard on the otherwise matching '62 and wanted it to be all original so I bought a '62 tort guard.

Here is the body after 4 coats of Deft brush on sand and sealer and final 320 block sanding...ready for color...still undecided :-\

Update: I have now decided against white blonde...I ordered shoreline and an now debating going with either oly white, no clearcoat/tort, or shoreline gold/tort.

hey! i saw and commented on this on the other forum...
if you do MK, you'll still see the funkiness underneath-- the dark marks.
you caused me to question Blond on my Korina.....

yeah, I know...the dark wear marks...I was thinking of going a little more opaque on the blonde, and/or relicing the arm wear to match the dark forearm wear on the front,
or going with a solid color like oly white or shoreline gold w/ gold.

Shoreline gold w/ gold guard is a nice combo. I think you will have a tough time with any semi-opaque finish given the way the body looks. A reliced black w/ tort is another classic look. I have a dakota red/tort JM that I love the look of. Been into reranch's coral color recently too.

I don't think it will look any good with a blonde finish if you don't get rid of the dark areas.

Re: '62 JM restoration (solid color + tort. or gold guard) still undecided...
I agree on the dark spots issue and wood filler spots...now if I could just make up my mind on one of these combinations. :-\ the guard will be tort.
MK Blonde - black wear marks issue, maybe go more opaque and tinted.
oly white/tort, no clear
oly white, tinted clear, deft
shoreline/tort - :-\
Burgundy mist/tort. plain headstock?
Coral/tort.
tough for me to decide.

Always been a fan of Oly white + tort. Not the "yellowish Oly, but as origianl intended "Oly Whte.....looks Killer with a tort guard imo, especially the nice one you got. Don't really care for gold guards, unless on Blonde or SB.

I do love Doug's shoreline JM, but I want to keep this one all '62. I like the tort and it still fits great.glimmertwin wrote: Shoreline gold w/ gold guard is a nice combo...Been into reranch's coral color recently too.
Coral is really starting to grow on me. I checked it out in the dressing room with the tort. and also gold and it really looks like a killer color. I may do Coral.
Here is a pic of the guard on another '61 body. What do you think, white, coral, shoreline, something else?
