Sunburst refinishers - recommendations / costs?

Post by will » Fri May 12, 2017 5:34 pm

I happened upon a Jazzmaster with a odd refinish that is in need of being re-done. Normally, I'd think about re-doing it in some sort of custom color, but the body is a pretty nice 1-piece slab of alder. It would be nice to get it re-done in an accurate '62-style sunburst. ...I think doing an accurate sunburst is beyond what I can accomplish with a rattlecan!

Has anyone out there had a good experience with getting a sunburst redone? Maybe you could share some pictures / costs / turnaround times?

It might be hard work finding them but ex-forumites Fullerplast and Older Brother both did fantastic nitro bursts. Doug in particular went into crazy period correct detail with the prep & painting process. He also documented it all.

I'm looking at doing something similar myself, sooner or later, but it'll be a '59 burst with faded red (almost a tobacco burst, I guess).

Happy hunting.

+1. Nobody whose work I have seen in person is as vintage-accurate as dano, but I'm in Canada so there are probably plenty of well-reputed people whose work never made it up here to the boonies.

Keep in mind that Danocaster requires the body to be stripped and prepped, if I remember correctly...so you'll need to also find someone to do that right (retaining the body contours etc) :)

A member here, I think it was SignoftheDragon, but I may be wrong, posted some YouTube videos showing him doing exotic sunburst finishes on Rickenbackers. His work appeared to be top-notch, though if it is SOTD he's in Utah, so the export/import issue remains.

Yes, that's the guy. I guess I confused mbene's reply for input from the OP - looks like jingle jangle's your man.
