Ha ha- that could have been written by me. Brings back some scary memories. :fp:
Glad this guitar has fallen into good hands, will be a beauty.

Subbed... You're threads are the best... Looking forward to this one.
I finally finish building a guitar, go to play it, and then remember, "oh yeah, that's right. I suck at playing... Why did I build another guitar again?"

Killer Tort guard. My god!

Re: neck thickness, it's very possible for a D+B to be a little thinner and flatter profiled than earlier, non-bound necks. My old FEB 66 JM was something like .82" / .92" (1st / 12th). Still a really comfy shape and size overall. Much closer to a D than a C. I always did love the way mine played.

Original frets? Can't really tell from pics but they still appear to be intact. Frets from this era were wide and flat and didn't interrupt the binding at all. Most refrets I've seen usually have the new frets laying on top of the binding. I get why its done and that its often easier or required but its a detail that always bugs me. I like seeing the one continuous binding. Make me feel good.
Thanks for this. Blonde makes total sense with what I've seen so far in the cavities and under the thimbles. Hadn't realised it had carried on this late as a standard colour - I always just associate it with the early gold guards. That's kind of a relief - black or burst and I'd have felt guilty about not restoring it back to what it was, but I'm so not a fan of blonde, so it's definitely not going back to that...sorry blonde fans.

Yep, it's definitely a flatter neck than the others I've restored, which were all '68/'69 I think. The frets are definitely not original. They're not just wide, but super tall, too, and the ends of the ones nearest the body are absolutely atrocious. There's fretboard damage where the old ones were removed, too.

Thanks all for the purple love/hate! ;D

Mustang is cool but on that purple, no tort - no cigar, imo.

Oh man, blonde would look so, so good especially with that guard! But follow your heart, i guess. :-/ :D

You'll be able to tell if it's ash when you strip the purple. Then you'll know for sure if it was actually blonde. It doesn't seem like there's primer under the purple so you're probably looking at original paint.

Bummer on the frets, I really like the og D+B frets.

I'm exited to see how you fill the holes in the guard. Is there also a hole in the body under that metal plate?

Me too! Hopefully with some matching donor material.

The body hole is the first pic in my last update:

Some inspiration.
Here's a thread where I patched an old guard with some material from Spitfire's early extras. Worked like a charm!

Welcome.

It's not the most precise job but I was really happy with the results. And a testament to SF tort for how well it blended.

Spent a bit of time getting properly started on this today:

First off, a healthy slap of very unhealthy paintstripper in the cavities, left to steep in clingfilm a la Dexter:
Image

An hour or two later - cleaned up pretty well. It was definitely blonde - I left a couple of spots in the bridge pickup cavity, and there was more in the bottoms of all the cavities.
Image

There was a 'WA' which appears to have been on top of the sealer layer but under the blonde beneath the bridge pickup, and an big '10' under the neck pup. Possibly a 'V' near the edge of the neck pocket, too, but very faint. I presume all fairly typical for '65'?
Image

Used a Jag guard template to chop the battery hole out cleanly. I presume it's some kind of alder, but it's a different species to anything I've handled before - smells super old when the router hits it!
Image

The rhythm cavity of a JM template matched the lower carve-up pretty well:
Image

I'd always assumed the arm contour was done by hand on a sander, but amazingly this one was almost identical to a '69 JM I refinished years ago and took a template from!
Image

One last chop and change:
Image

Last up, I cut new pieces from an old scrap of alder on the bandsaw and finessed them on the sander, then glued and clamped them for the night:

Really good fun :)

If the body was a factory blonde, then the wood is ash..............should be light also.
