'66 Mustang project

Found this the other day, looked okay except for the refinish and a few missing parts (pickup covers, string tree, some screws and bits). Going to need a new nut too.
The neck has been refinished also, I've got to see about removing that...
They were kind enough to tape off the neck date though...but not the truss rod nut?
I had a '65 a few years ago that had the bridge pickup swapped out, so it was cool to see the original pickups.
Got all the hardware off, going to experiment with the finish...looks like it was Blue to begin with.
My old '65...I want to get this one like it!

That blue could be very well under there. I'd try to see if it is. Maybe you can restore it! It would be tedious work but hell, having the original finish would be worth it.
Cool project!

Good luck. Looks like a fun project. That blue would look very nice.

Needs more paint. I think they left some of the fretboard exposed
Looks like a good score though! Are you restoring it to Daphne blue?

Yeah...I know, it's nuts what people do to guitars!
I'm planning to go back to blue, though I haven't done much of anything to it. I did order some pickup covers, but that's about it so far...

Be extra careful with the headstock. With a bit of luck there'll be a decal under there.

So no luck with it being nitro...and no luck with any original finish.
Here's where I had to stop tonight. That crack runs all the way around...but seems stable so far.
The finish on the neck isn't actually that thick, there's a grey primer or something under the red that's coming off pretty easy.
A few stamps were still hiding under the red at the heel!
Things I've learned so far with the heat gun...any remaining nitro (like the layer that "was" there in the neck pocket) is pretty flammable! So are side dots...luckily I caught the one before it got too bad. Also the sealer or whatever on the body is a pain.

I had high hopes...I even got a little excited when I pulled the first layer off, thinking there was an outline, but no luck sadly.

Neck & body just got to MJT. Got my waterslides in today...though it'll be a while before they get to go on, so into the parts box they go!
