So great! You're a lucky guy! Really love that with the black guard. I had a similar work with not that luck http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... 1&t=102112

Amazing! If someone told me that a rotary sander was involved in any way, in their attempts to peel back a finish to original, I'd imagine they were gonna ruin it.

Brilliant save! You proved theoretical me waaay wrong!

I totally wouldn't use a palm sander in most circumstances, but the repaint's clearcoat was a thick coat of poly. At first I tried to scrape it off, but the original paint was brittle and easily chipped by the blade. The poly was taking forever to sand through.

I had luck with the palm sander, but I had to be careful to keep it moving, change discs often, and move on to a new spot as soon as the purple vanished.

I was following the story on your guitar - I think it looks great, even with the sanded edges!

...although I kind of like the paint wrinkle (?) lines under the pickguard halfway through the sanding process

They look like topographic lines or sand ripples
There are still some wrinkly lines of purple under the pickguard - they were really deep! It seems like Mustangs of this era had issues with the pickguards reacting with the finishes. I've seen several guitars with pickguards that look like they glued themselves to the body.

Will, your resuscitation skills are legendary!

Looking at it, I wonder who the heck thought that cobalt blue poly refinish could possibly look better than the original competition blue?

Nicely done! Black looks good, but mint would also look pretty sweet.

I love it when it turns out they didn't strip the old finish. Great find and great work!

Nice work, measured and controlled, and it really paid off. The black PG looks good but a yellowed/aged pearl one would really set it off ;)
