IIRC the first gen bass vi (with the 3 switch switch plate) used strat style pups, but they had a metal surround on thembulrich wrote: The body is super light (as other 62's I've played) and the 62 pups are really something else. Much bigger than the jags.

I meant bigger sounding > fuller in tone.
Here's a few quick crappy pictures of the neck, any help identifying would be much appreciated:

what about the back of the neck? is it one piece or is there a scarf joint near the headstock? the base of the neck is very fender looking, weird...

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Maybe the headstock got whacked and replaced with the 3+3? You're right, the rest of the neck, especially the radius looks quite Fenderish.OffYourFace wrote: what about the back of the neck? is it one piece or is there a scarf joint near the headstock? the base of the neck is very fender looking, weird...
Would it be repairable? Wonder if Stereordinary could tackle something like this?

Great minds think..... If so, the 'why oh why' in the thread title is very fitting.DB wrote:Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Maybe the headstock got whacked and replaced with the 3+3? What is the size difference on the pups, when compared to Strat and Jaguar pups? I know that the back base of it is much bigger than either..

the bottom plate of the actual pickups on the 1st Gen VI's is quite large and unlike anything else that i know of...thewizardofaz wrote: What is the size difference on the pups, when compared to Strat and Jaguar pups? I know that the back base of it is much bigger than either..
when we were doing the first USA CG replicas... i wanted to have exact replicas made...
i was meeting with machinists and tool&die men and they all told me it would be insanely expensive to copy those surround rings...
i can't remember any exact numbers, but it seems like it would have been a couple of grand just to get TWO sets done
i'm waaay jealous of Brian's new rescue project
you could go original Olympic White and we could have twins...
(nah, i'd go metallic!)
also very interested in this neck/headstock story!!!
i definitely know a guy that can do it...
my guy Pete has worked for Heritage since it was the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo and i've seen some of the snapped-off gibson headstock jobs he's done...
take a closer look at the heel to see if there's any possible pencil marking underneath the stamp!

Re: 62 Bass VI...why oh why?!
I'll take some pics and inspect closer. It would be very odd if this was a replaced headstock. Neck fells much heavier than a Fender (though it could be the Schaller tuners).
Alfred (or others) do you know a good refinish person in MI or IL?

Cant you ask the various sellers what happened with the neck...as it's gone round on ebay a few times over the past couple of years surely someone knows the story?

Re: 62 Bass VI...why oh why?!
thanks guys
got the '62 and Jazz bass out the other day...
for like only the 4th time since MARCH
started planting my field
didn't even get half of what i wanted to accomplish this fall...
my brothers didn't help me AT ALL
and now the ground's frozen...
this VI may have been listed a few times over the last few years, but i don't believe it sold every time...
i dunno
