So cool man. I love the old pictures. I kind of dig the silver gold/copper burst too.

What everyone else said...great story, and love how you documented it all with all the pictures. Terrific post. He (or whomever did the painting) nailed the Danelectro "appliance burst" finish, right down to the greenish-almond white part. Kinda cool, actually. Congrats on the guitar!

This is guitar feels so sweet! Thanks for all the nice responses.
I have one question. How do '66 pickups end up in an late 63 - early 64?

First, congratulations are in order Surfin Bird!
That guitar has a pedigree that is truly unique.
It's been changed before, so I wouldn't feel any remorse in having it re-finished.
I think it would look fabulous in sparkle. Gold, Champagne, Emerald, Silver, or maybe something truly Dutch, like a two-tone Tulip style finish. After all the guitar is beginning a new life in the Netherlands.
Interesting about the 1966 pickups. The original owner doesn't know why?

They don't is my guess. Unless the guitar was sent back to fender that year for repair, or he purchased pickups directly from fender in 66 (if you could even do that back then...) not sure.
Usually it's the other way around. Older parts in a newer guitar. Like old pot dates in a 66.

Maybe the guitar tech gave back the wrong pickups when installing the DiMarzios.
If you're naming it, may I suggest THE COKELORD as a counterpart to the Crackwhore?

Funny thing is that when I talk about refinishing it into sparkle; I want cokebottle green sparkle.
She can be a lord, just remember that she is definitely a lady!
Have you seen that waistline, have you felt her silky tender neck or heard the sound of her delicate arm waving up and down?
But damn I need to get a screwdriver, the bridge is set up horribly. I can't get a sound out of the A string

How cool is it to get the whole history of a guitar?! Unheard of. Awesome story and history...I think it makes the guitar worth more than the sum of its parts.

Re: NGD: The Blingburst '63-'64 ('66) Jaguar
Little update.
The pickguard is fixed with a piece of spitfire tort after the original owner almost put a humbucker in the neck.
This is the pickguard before. You can see how the old piece got placed back but was missing gaps.
And I had the pickups rewind, new wiring and mute installed.
Now I have to decide if I want to stay with this weird paint that's bubbling at the back. Maybe just a refin in the same style

I have a feeling that this was one of the guitars painted by Denny Swiden back in the 60s. He was the guy who painted Dick Dale's Strat, along with a few others.

Good job on keeping the original finish so far.
Be strong! It's a cool as hell part of it's story, on all those record covers etc...and it does look really cool

This is one of those cases where I would absolutely keep the refinish. I agree. It's such a cool part of the guitar's history!mgeek wrote:Did he live in Spain?TheSurfer wrote:I have a feeling that this was one of the guitars painted by Denny Swiden back in the 60s.
