I used to have one of them a long time ago. Bought it cheap and sold it for double the amount. Should have kept it! Lesson learned: do not sell Jazzmasters ;)
There is one on Marktplaats (similar to eBay) in Holland. Asking price is steep, €2750
Actually, I have seen them quite a bit in Holland. Maybe Fender sent their unsellable guitars to my country back in the seventies.

I've become a pretty big fan of 70's Fenders in general. They are quickly becoming some of my favorite guitars. In particular like offkeyericdee said the pickups are what I love about them. They're just a bit more powerful and punchy. I find this is true with 70's mustangs as well. I was lucky enough to buy, sell, and buy back my '78. It is a little bit heavier than my AVRI TS but honestly I like that and at least with a jazzmaster I feel like the weight is evenly distributed on a heavier guitar as opposed to say a really heavy les paul. Also stylistically speaking I really like what Fender was doing. Block and Binding plus black guards are some of my favorite appointments! Anyway here is my '78:

They're my favourite sunburst jazzmasters, and my most accessible way of getting into owning a JM. Just wish there were more available in europe!

Heck, I wish there were more available here in the States. In the past couple of months I have seen two for sale, and I bought one of them. If I wanted a 58 or a 59, I could pick and choose.

Reading this thread makes me feel like there's a 'whooshing' noise as I get dragged back to the late 80's when as a Hendrix obsessed beginner I passed by an (admittedly tatty looking) 67 ish SG Jr and a brown Jazzmaster with B&B board on the guitar rack to get to the White MIJ Strat...

Not happy with that recollection..

A brown Jazzmaster with blocks and binding?! You're kidding, right?! I will probably never see the likes of that. Next you're going to tell me it was $300, wait, don't tell me.

Yeah I should probably clarify that point

When I say 'Brown' what I think it was (and it's a long time gone now) is that it was one that had been stripped of it's original finish and so was basically natural but to my teenage sensibilities was 'Brown' and therefore dull beyond belief.
As to price ? As far as I recall I think the point the guy in the shop was trying to make was
'Look man, for a few quid more than the Japanese reissue Strat you can have one of these real, proper American guitars'
Trying to remember what the dollar-pound exchange rate was back then, possibly 2-1 so not $300 but maybe more like $5-600. Still a real deal for this side of the Atlantic but of course, being 14-15 I knew far better than that..

Doh !

Wow, that's crazy ridiculous good. Funny that it has a tortoise shell guard and not black. I think the mocha color was added in 1973, and black guards were introduced in 74, so I guess it's possible.
