I've seen a couple of mid-70's JM's go for up for sale on Fleabay UK in the last 12 months. Also in Holland. Seems many of them are cut from the very heavy Northern Ash so I'm guessing a lot of guys/girls are hanging onto them knowing they won't get big dollars for them now but maybe in a few years time. And also, the few people that still do have surviving mid/late 70's versions have awesome guitars no matter how heavy they are. I found a set of NOS 78 JM pickups from a guy in London who had a bunch of NOS Fender parts that his dad had left over from running a guitar shop in London (so the story goes) through the 80's and 90's - I bought them for my JM Bass VI I built a few years back and those pickups are absolutely delicious. Definitely original as they were six digit stamps ending in 78 and the untouched leads were the stock black and white PVC sheathed wire. I own a 66 JM with the huge headstock and it is a sweet sounding guitar, but I would never say no to another JM from the 70's.

Thinking further about this issue - I didn't intend to buy a 66 JM, last year when I had just enough cash spare to afford a mid to late 70's version, I couldn't find one. And as fate would have it, the 66 pictured above turned up on Ebay at a very low starting price, so I gritted my teeth and entered the bidding war, sniping in the last few seconds and won the game of chicken with only two other bidders. Ended up getting it for not much more than a mid-70's one goes for...

PS there's a killer mint 76 going on Reverb in TX right now. It is beautiful!

Here's my '73 refin. The refinish didn't use grain filler, so it's a bit like a Novo job, with the grain showing through. The original pickups are long gone, so I've got a NovakJM-V/JM-T set in, and they're great. It also had a TOM bridge when I got it, but I had a set of Staytrem conversion thimbles in my parts drawer and tried a mustang-style bridge, but the TOM actually sounded better, so I installed a M1 and that sorted it out.

The block inlays on these are really interesting, less fragmented pearloid than the ones in the 60s. I love the black guard ones.
