Some weird stuff happened on student necks.
I've had a '65 Duo Sonic II that had a slab board. This, despite the fact that 'everyone' says slab boards stopped in '62. There it was ... a '65 slab board Duo Sonic II.
60s "mustang" neck with B width and clay dots.

My Jan66 mustang neck with f-tuners has a slab board. I thought that, because veneers are more labour-intensive/expensive, student models never got them.Despot wrote:Some weird stuff happened on student necks.

No, they got them. I'd a '66 Mustang that was a veneer board.
From what I've read the veneer board was originally intended as an 'upgrade' ... i.e. there was supposedly a benefit to the round laminate board over the original flat/slab board. Perhaps Fender used up any slab boards they had lying around on the 'student' models, moving the Jaguars over to round lam fairly quickly.

The story I've heard is that around 65 & 66 a bunch of student guitars left the factory with slab boards, because there was a huge demand for the student guitars at the time, and slab boards were quicker to put together.
I've seen quite a few 24" guitars from around that time with slab boards. ...I've never seen a Musicmaster/Duo-sonic/Mustang with a Jaguar headstock & date stamp though! Good eye on that one!!

This sounds like a familiar story. Does that mean mine was a rush job? It's got a bit of a spacious neck pocket...will wrote:The story I've heard is that around 65 & 66 a bunch of student guitars left the factory with slab boards, because there was a huge demand for the student guitars at the time, and slab boards were quicker to put together.
