NGD 1961 Bass VI
I have not been this excited in some time over a vintage score...
I was really sweating bullets worried it would not get through US customs coming in from South Africa, but it safely arrived today in 1 piece with its Brazilian rosewood fret board. This is one of the first BassVI made to take to the 1961 NAMM show. It has the 10/61 neck date, and a clipped logo because they did not have the actual Bass VI logo ready. It will need a refin but other than that it is all in tact. Watch for the pickups soon. Actually I have been making the pickups for a couple years I just needed this to get the chrome ring and the cover made to vintage spec.

Holy moly! Congrats Curtis!
Do you know what color you will refin it in? Can the guard be saved?

Yep, original. These early ones came with those and pickups that are similar in shape and size to Tele bridge pickups (though they look like strat pickups on first look). Part of the reason Curtis bought the bass was to be able to recreate the pickup surrounds (it's in the first post).egosheep wrote:Well it has those chrome surrounds on the pickups, is that original?StevenO wrote: Nothing wrong with the guard. Yeah I have been making these pickups for a couple years now, just spent the past 10 years trying to get the cover and metal ring to pattern.
The pickups is much more like a Tele bridge than a strat. This is one of the most rare Fender pickup in that it was made for such a short period.
I am planning on putting them in a Jaguar as well.. I think it would be epic!

I wonder how these would sound in a regular 25.5" scale guitar.
Grats on scoring this Bass VI!
And thanks for the R&D that the rest of us will benefit from, lol!

Thanks for the support and the kind words!
I just wish people would remember this when people complain on how expensive my pickups are, compared to others.
Please remind people I spend a LOT of my money acquiring and recreating the odd and rare stuff and dont just the stuff that already floods the market.
For example I will likely never recoup my costs on the XII pickup, and I spent over $18k last year just to get the Bisonic/Darkstar pickup tooled up. This does not even begin to touch the non production hours I spend in R&D coming up with all the crazy pickup ideas that others just copy. Oh and dont forget the WRHB hat one was expensive too.
I could charge much less and make a lot more money if I just reproduces the easy stuff.
Once again thanks for your support

Re: NGD 1961 Bass VI
The question of the day is, was the guitar more expensive than the shipping from South Africa?
Awesome score, that thing's a beauty, what color was it originally and is it going to get re-fin'd in the same?

I just really don't get why people think that an handwound PU should cost less than an industrial made one. Same for guitars. The handmade/wound/crafted route should be taken following the desire of owning an object with non conventional features, almost taylored on yourself. But probably the showbiz flattened our tastes so much that we just want a cheap alternative to the big brands. You brought fresh air among musician, and that's priceless.
Uh, almost forgot, congraaaaatttsss!
