MATCHING HEADSTOCK

Post by vizio » Mon Apr 25, 2011 10:31 pm

Hello everyone,

does anybody knows if pre-CBS custom colour Jaguars always come with matching headstock?
From what I know it seems like only Olympic white could have it or not.
Currently I am interested in a black 1962 pre CBS Jaguar but the headstock is natural. The body paint looks nitro from the checking but I am trying to understand if it could be a sunburst neck on a black JG or ifthe guitar has been refinished.

Thanks.
V

As far as i know, the only custom colours that you could get without matching headstocks were olympic white and transparent blonde. Transparent blonde and sunburst were the only two that COULD NOT come with a matching headstock. So, unless fender really did make "1 of everything", i would say the neck is not original to the body, if the body is the original black custom finish. Hope this helps.

Matching Heads started in mid-1962. I have seen a few CAR, LPB, and others with the natural headstock.
Very rare to see a Jaguar...not as much for a Jazzmaster.

I have also seen 2 original Sunbursted Jazzmaster Headstocks. One was just the headstock, the other had the back of the neck sunbursted, too.

The owner says that the neck is an original 62 but the neck plate isnt original. It was changed in the 70s.
I guess that someone changed the original neck with the actual one.

Found this old post on matching sunburst headstocks and noticed many were asking for pictures. A couple of years I traded a refin Jazzmaster for a sunburst Jaguar with matching sunburst headstock. According to one of Hollands Fender experts it is the real deal.

Unfortunately somebody screwed up the electronics and I need to get them fixed.

Sunburst matching headstocks just don't look quite right for me.
Another example is the sunburst Hallmark 60 Custom.
Gorgeous looking guitar with sweet body binding too, but the matching headstock kinda spoils it for me.
I imagine Mr Shade can make them with without though?

sunburst matching headstocks make me think Japanese guitar.

Love this example for it's rarity.

Rarity was my main consideration. Not beauty. And I agree it doesn't look like your typical Fender guitar either.
