history of jazzmaster tort?

Post by takeittothemall » Sun Apr 03, 2011 3:24 pm

does anyone know exactly what kind of jazzmaster tort is associated with what years? in which years was the tort more brown and in which years was it more red? it was introduced in 1960, right? and it changed from celluloid to plastic in 1966? does anyone have any other info to offer?

thanks.

is it a matter of no one knowing the answer to my question or of my question not being interesting enough to solicit answers? i remain curious.

I'm interested, but I don't have the answers.

Quickly scanned through my "library" of Fender books, & can find no reference to this detail. Lots of colour photos, but the change is probably too subtle to show up in these. However, on the assumption that all Fender tort guards changed at around the same time (which seems likely) I can perhaps tie it down a little.

I have a 65 CAR Bass VI with a "more red" guard, & a burst 68 P Bass that has the "more brown" guard.

So, between 1965 & 1968?

I doubt they changed much more than the anodized->nitro->plastic

i would hazard a guess that due to the random nature of the grain/marbling of proper tort guards and the fact that over the intervening years they have all faded and worn at different rates (according to how much ultra-violet light etc they've been exposed to) that it would be difficult to pin it down to any more than what has already been said above.
:wtf: anyhoo... that's my tuppence worth.
mind you, there was a glut of not very nice "meatball" guards around 1966 wasn't there? so perhaps there have been other "trends" in vintage tort guards. or am i recalling those threads wrong?
p.s. do i get a prize for the longest sentence of the day?

From this extract I would say that every sheet varied a little and probably looked very different at shift change.

"A very good imitation of tortoiseshell can be made by colouring a portion of the pasty celluloid with a, brown or yellowdye soluble in spirit (aniline colour), and then working the dough along with some nearly colourless celluloid. As the two are not properly amalgamated, streaks and patches of colour appear throughout. Considerable experience, however, is required."

The amount of red appears to be a function of how much light the guard was exposed to. If I look at the guard on my '64, overall it's red, but under the bridge (plink ploink) and knob skirts it's very brown/dark. There's a "tan line pr0n" thread somewhere with pics.
