Vintage Bass VI mutes

Post by barry.beattie » Mon Mar 28, 2011 11:02 pm

Hi all

I just bought a slab-board '62 Bass VI (although it's yet to arrive).

It doesn't have a mute, and I could really use one for what I want it for.

I've heard that AV and MIJ Jaguar mutes don't fit - the Bass VI bridge is wider.

any suggestions on what to do about a mute for this Bass VI?

3 switch '62 VI's don't have mutes. If it's a 4 switch '62 and therefore missing, Ebay is your only hope. But you are correct Jaguar ones do not fit..too small.

In more than a decade of watchiung the web (especially ebay) I have seen only one BASS VI mute available for sale ... and I bought it .... I am sure others have been there, but they are few and far between.

As far as what can you use.... basically nothing, unless you want to fit a Jazzmaster/jaguar bridge and then fit a Jaguar mute.
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

Could you drill out the bridge holes on a Jag mute so it would fit over a wider set of bridge holes?

No. A jag mute is too small full stop. It would never fit around a VI bridge.

damn. Looks like I'm out of luck. This Bass VI's mute probably got thrown out in the trash decades ago (along with every else's thumb rests and bridge and pickup covers).

Why am I fussy about a mute? To use it as intended: deaden the strings when required and flip it off when not. The way I play, using the fleshy part of my hand won't work.

The Fender Custom Shop seems busy pushing out new (relic'd) Bass VI's. I wonder if they'd consider manufacturing some parts? with 7-800 vintage Bass VI's made back in the day, there'd be ... what? ... 40-50 that have lost there mutes? Maybe more?

Thanks guys.
Barry

I'll just chime in to say I have had an ebay search looking for VI parts for years specifically looking for a mute and I have yet to see one. If one happens to pop up on ebay, you can be assured I'll be going after it HARD.

I took the mute off my old bass VI. I guess I'll try not to misplace it. :)
