My Surprise 68/67 Mustang
I bought my first Mustang for $250 at a small guitar store in St. Louis in 1994. It was black and someone had hammered jeweled inlays on the side of the neck, but Kurt played one and the price was great. Being 15 and not really knowing much/anything I assumed it was late 70’s earl 80 since it was painted black. I loved this guitar for years and only set it aside when I got my first Les Paul. One day 4 years after purchase a bandmate suggested we paint the Mustang silver and I was down. So, we masked the pickups and pickguard and neck and painted the body silver.
Out of curiosity before restringing I decided to take the neck off and have a look. Low and behold it was stamped 68 and the body stamped 67 and under the silver and black paint was Olympic white. I carefully put it all back together and I set it aside meaning to one day give the old lady the restoration she deserved for the crimes I and another had committed. Unfortunately, that day never came, it went into storage at a friend’s house and disappeared out of my life.
So, if you come across a badly painted silver Mustang treat her better than I did.

This article fits housewife’s stories section in a cheap tabloid paper.

I've never understood these kinds of stories where a guitar ends up with a friend / ''in storage'' and then disappears. I can't ever imagine forgetting where I've stored my gear, and I never lend instruments to friends / acquaintances.
It's your own property, go get it back.

I think this is a bot and one of those “I made a bot read all of OSG and then make its own thread” things

times change, in 1994 a mustang was roughly equivalent to owning a pawn shop teisco now... far from anyone’s prized possession.
lending instruments to buddies just makes you an official card carrying member of the cool guy club, there’s nothing morally superior about keeping your stuff to yourself.

Not a moral issue at all, and I'm not trying to say that I'm morally superior to anyone by not lending out instruments. I stopped lending them out because they kept coming back to me broken or not at all.
Anyway hope you get your guitar back in the end.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, to say the least. Maybe in the late 70s and 80s, but by 1994 Mustangs were already popularized by Nirvana, Pixies, Mudhoney, Sloan and quite a few other bands.postchrist wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 9:16 pmX-Ray Spex wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 12:38 amI've never understood these kinds of stories where a guitar ends up with a friend / ''in storage'' and then disappears. My teenage self was absolutely drooling at the idea of finding a Mustang (or Jag) as early as 91.
They were nowhere near as popular as they are now, but people that followed alternative rock bands knew they were good guitars.
You could see and hear that they weren't junk guitars.
I suppose the stubborn Strat/Tele only guys snubbed them, and many of those dudes still do, but anyone who heard the guitars on record or got to try one out would be hard pressed to give them the same evaluation as a junk store Teisco.
Obviously, being a student model, the Mustang is not as versatile as a Strat or Tele.
I love Mustangs, but I gotta be honest about them.
At the end of the day, they are Leo era Fenders with well designed electronics and hardware (and a really nice body shape).
They're far from being low end Teiscos. Teisco even had some decent models, but overall they were cheaply made and had trashy pickups on most models, not to mention uncomfortable necks. You'd have to be drinking the blues lawyer kool aid pretty hard to go that far.

@x-ray spex, i was in a pissy mood.. my apologies, that was rude of me.
@boring postcards, i’m only going off of anecdotes so you likely know better than i do. i just know a few friends of mine happened upon their jags and mustangs for around the $100 mark at pawn shops in the earlier 90s, before they started to rise much. wasn’t really trying to compare the quality as much as just the general regard that most musicians held them with.

I wonder what the store in St. Louis was.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Really cool of you dudes to apologize and leave it. We've all been guilty of being an ass. Much respect for you two.
I hope you get your guitar back. Wonder what it's up to, nowadays.
