Question for the bound neck crowd

Is the binding lacquered or left bare/scraped?
I'm just finalizing a project Jag and I have a bound neck that I lacquered all the way up to the shoulder but before i commit to scraping it back I'd like to know how actual vintage ones were done. I've never actually had my hands on a real one...

Not vintage - but on my Thinline Jaguar and the two B&B necks I have the Binding is lacquered.

I know Gibson always leaves the lacquer... I'm not sure about Fender but it seems like an awful lot of work to scrape the binding... high skill and high precision work at that with a large margin for fuckups. Doesn't seem worth it...

You know, that's what I figured. I guess the photos of 60s Fenders with binding I've seen seem to have such white binding I wasn't sure if it was scraped or not.

I think having a ‘step’ in the finish before the binding if it was masked or otherwise removed would just create issues with finish chipping, and feel gross to play.

I was looking at some close up pics I have from a 60s Jag and it seems to have the step that looks like scraped binding on a les paul or something. In a couple of the shots I can see the seam at the edge of the lacquer and the binding. I guess it could have been a refin. My questions all stem from how I oversprayed mine with tinted clear and it looks a bit too yellow so i wasn't sure whether to stick or twist. I might try sanding it back a little and maybe shoot some more regular untinted clear over at the end

On my actual 66 Jaguar the binding was stark white. I think it was the same on my first AV65 Jaguar and AV65 Jaguar. For some dumb ass and annoying reason, it’s lacquered over on my Thin Skin AV65. I’m gonna keep this guitar forever but the binding thing and the trem route being too shallow to properly use the trem are super fucking ridiculous things to me considering the rarity and price and fact that they should pretty much all be the same since they’re CNC’d out.

I much prefer having actual white binding. I had a B&B MIJ JM66B Jazzmaster and you literally couldn’t see the binding anywhere on the neck. It was the same color as the maple and ended up annoying me to all fuck and dumping it as soon as I could. Having said that, I’d still love to find a JG66B in Lake Placid Blue, which again for reasons that make zero ass sense to me, is a ridiculously rare guitar.

My special run AV65 Jag came with satin neck finish so there is no lacquer on the binding. I really like that.

My 60th Anniversary Jazzmaster had lacquer over the binding. It really bugged me because when the lacquer yellowed the binding looked gross brown. So I scraped the lacquer off and it looks so much better.
